Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones: "A Quarterback to Draft Is a Future Consideration”

Jason HenryMar 22, 2011

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says that he’s fielding calls about trading down in the 2011 National Football League draft. Jones told the Dallas-Fort Worth Sports News that two teams have inquired about the pick and that he “feels good about the quality of the players down through that ninth and 10th draft position.”

Knowing that Jerry is considering trading down in the draft, does that mean he wants to go after Wisconsin defensive end J.J. Watt? Watt amassed 11 sacks in his two years as starting end for the Badgers, and with the team allowing starting defensive end Marcus Spears to test free agency, Watt may be high on Jones’ list.

The team is also pretty low on linebacker Anthony Spencer, with some considering the former Purdue Boilermaker a bust. Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller had 33 total sacks in his college career, and with his 6’3”, 243-pound frame, he’s versatile enough to make a huge impact for the Cowboys off of the edge.

Jones also commented on the team’s quarterback situation to DFW.

“Obviously, a quarterback to draft right now is a future consideration,” said Jones.

Lately there has been considerable talk about replacing current Cowboys quarterback, Tony Romo. Romo missed the majority of last season with a broken collarbone, and the Cowboys suffered because as they skated to a 6-10 record. Of course, Romo’s absence wasn’t the sole cause of the Cowboys problems, but not having your franchise player is of no help to a team with Super Bowl aspirations.

But in regards to Jones's statement about drafting a quarterback, he said that in reference to the team interviewing former Auburn quarterback Cam Newton. The Cowboys interviewed several players, but Newton’s name jumped off of the list because of his recent notoriety and the Cowboys so-called issues at quarterback.

Jones has stated before that he has no intention of ridding the team of Romo and that he has full confidence in Romo’s abilities. Romo is one of the league’s best pass throwers, and the Cowboys can’t do much better than him.

Yet it’s not Romo’s skills at slinging the rock that bothers most fans and pundits, it’s his leadership ability. Is Tony the right guy to lead the Cowboys back to the promised land? Can Romo handle a player with a budding boiling temperament like Dez Bryant, or will Romo’s lack of leadership allow Dez to take over the locker room like a former diva wide receiver in the past?

The Cowboys will not draft a quarterback in the first, second or third round, and fans of Romo should rest comfortably knowing that the product of Burlington, Wisconsin is safe as the starting star on the field in Big D.

But with the 2011 season in limbo and the Cowboys owner about as anxious about a Super Bowl as Paula Dean is around a stick of butter, Tony had better find a way to bring the title to Big D or Jerry will find someone who will.
