Vitali Klitschko's Knock Out of Odlanier Solis: What Really Happened?

King JMar 21, 2011

Boxing fans have been buzzing about the infamous controversial first round knock out of top heavyweight contender Odlanier Solis, who went down by the hands of Vitali "Dr. Iron Fist" Klitschko Saturday afternoon in their highly promoted heavyweight title fight in Cologne, Germany.

Up to the fight, many were hyping Solis as a very live under dog who would have a legit chance of upsetting the older Klitschko brother mostly based on his impressive amateur record and reputation, where he defeated many of the top heavyweight contenders with ease.

At the very least, most were viewing this fight to be the most challenging competition that Vitali would be in the ring for quite some time.

As a result of this fight taking place live in Germany at their primetime hours, many across the world, especially here in America, missed the actual live broadcast of the fight and caught the replays that were being blasted all over YouTube and other video uploading sites.

Personally, I was working that Saturday afternoon and was driving from one location to the next when I checked my Twitter application on my iPhone to see that everyone was talking about the first round knock out that Vitali just administered.

All of the tweets were mostly critical of the knockdown, implying it was not a legitimate knockout, and it was even a dive.

So I quickly hopped on my computer as soon as I got to my office and started to ask the boxing heads of my Twitter followers what exactly happened. I got a mixed response, but the majority of the people expressed to me that they felt Solis took a dive and injured his leg and could not get up.

So I had to see this for myself and searched YouTube for any footage of the fight, and I came across a video and watched it for myself.

The fight actually looked competitive, with Solis boxing Vitali and landing cleanly to his face. Yes these shots had no damage or even effect on Vitali, but if an objective judge were to judge this round, Solis was having a good round.

Then, in the final seconds of the fight, Vitali really finally opens up and throws a quick one-two punch, barely landing his first right hand on the temple of Solis and completely missing with the second left hand it happen so fast and so sloppy it really looked as if Vitali was swatting a fly that was pestering him in the ring.

Then, out of nowhere in a very delayed reaction, Solis falls backward in an almost comical poor version of a stuntman manner grabbing each leg as if he needs to make sure he emphasizes that one of his legs has gone out for whatever reason.

Solis then tries his best to regain his composure and lift himself up to beat the count, but his injured leg is just way too injured to stand up straight properly, and the referee has seen enough and decides to wave off the fight.

Now after this fight, many are weighing in on their opinions on whether the stoppage was indeed legit or not.

Was Solis really knocked down by a Vitali right hand that barely seemed to land on his head?

Was Solis' leg really so badly injured that he could not even stand up properly?

Many boxing experts weighed in on this controversial stoppage, and after viewing the footage over and over again, many are siding with Solis that there was indeed some sort of freak injury that did occur as he fell backwards from the punch.

One of Solis' doctors has even vouched for him and posted several "alleged" x-rays of Solis injured leg on the Internet.

One of the most interesting and most credible experts to weigh in on the matter was former two time heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs, who most recently fought Vitali and who was very vocal on his Twitter account stating:

"I'm not bragging but I took 281 punches to the head over 12 rounds Solis took 1 right hand and broke his knee. He get's 1.8 million come on."

So let's make it official fight fans with a poll.
