UFC 128 Results: Who Lived Up to Their Pre-Fight Hype Quotes?
Now that the dust has settled, who has lived up to their pre-fight quotes?
Urijah Faber, Erik Koch and Jim Miller all announced themselves as some of the top contenders in the Bantamweight, Featherweight and Lightweight divisions.
Nate Marquardt got back on track in his perpetual title hunt, and his teammate Brendan Schaub put on a career-defining performance.
In the main event, Jon Jones lived up to his hype looks to be the most talked about fighter of the year.
Now let us take a look at how the performance's lived up to the pre-fight quotes.
8. Schaub: Big Fights
1 of 8
"it's not just another fight, it's the biggest fight of my life"
Schaub treated this like the biggest fight of his life, and that is why he won.
Mirko was crafty on the feet and on the ground, but Schaub came in prepared to mix it up, and that is why he was able to defeat the legend.
7. Faber: Big Things in Small Packages
2 of 8
"I dont think that theres any debate about the excitement of the lightweight fighters. I'm the best guy out there."
Urijah performed great, but did not quite live up to this quote.
Although not a boring fight, it was not the most exciting either.
Although Faber has a chance to win the Bantamweight Championship and become the top ranked bantamweight in the world, it is not going to be easy.
6. Wineland: KO Power
3 of 8
"Everbody that I've ever put my hands on—they've either been rocked or they've been dropped. I have the power to knock anybody out."
Wineland was able to neutralize Faber's ground skills for the most part, but that also did not allow him to open up on the feet.
Faber was the one finding more openings on the feet and landing the better punches.
Wineland does have power in his shots, but they need to land.
5. Filipovic: Surviving a Legend
4 of 8
"He's good...he wont survive three rounds with me."
Mirko Cro Cop was wrong about this one as he was who was not able to last three rounds with Brendan Schaub.
4. Faber: Finding Opportunities
5 of 8
"I'm dangerous at every aspect of this game. Whatever opportunity he gives me to finish the fight, that's what im looking for, that's what I'll be happy with."
Faber was right about being able to find opportunities, but wrong about being able to finish.
At first Wineland was worried about takedowns, so in the second round Faber starting finding opportunities on the feet.
Once Wineland starting honing in on the stand-up, Faber found his opportunities for takedowns.
Effective fighting by Urijah Faber.
3. Schaub: New Fighter, New Quote
6 of 8
"For me It's: left hand- 'fight of the night', right hand- 'knockout of the night.'"
Brendan Schaub hit this quote on the money, just like he hit Mirko with his right hand.
Schaub mixed it up well against Cro Cop, and eventually ended the fight with his right hand and earning "Knockout of the Night."
2. Rua: Do Not Let History Repeat
7 of 8
"I'll do everything in my power to not let him get a belt at 23 years old."
It did look like Rua did everything in his power, but that was still not enough to stop history from repeating.
Jon Jones tore through Shogun just like Shogun tore through the PRIDE 2005, 205 lbs Grand Prix.
1. Jones: Spoken into Existence
8 of 8
"It’s funny, I’ve been doing some autograph signings and I’ve been signing lately ‘Jon Jones Champion 2011,’ almost as if I’ve spoken it into existence."
His words were nearly prophetic as he took control of the fight from the opening bell and never let go.
Jones spoke about his destiny to become champion, and his destiny would not be denied.
