UFC 128 Results: Official B/R Stock Report, Analysis from Newark, New Jersey

Andrew MahlmannJun 2, 2018

Jon Jones put on about as memorable a championship performance as you could ask for.

Years from now, people will be looking back at this main event.

Although the action on the rest of the card will understandably be overshadowed by Jones' monumental achievement, there were still a lot of good fights.

There was great action from top contenders and emerging contenders.

Bleacher Report breaks down where each fighter's performance leaves his stock in the UFC.

Raphael Assuncao

1 of 24

Raphael Assuncao's stock drops.

Assuncao was a pretty hot featherweight prospect, but now he has lost three of his last four.

Erik Koch

2 of 24

Erik Koch's stock jumps up big.

With three finishes in a row, including this most recent "knockout of the night," Dana White is referring to him by just his first name.

Koch is now a top contender for Jose Aldo's featherweight strap.

Constantinos Philippou

3 of 24

Constantinos Philippou's stock drops just a little.

He lost to Catone on short notice, but he was also shut out, losing every round.

Nick Catone

4 of 24

Nick Catone's stock rises a little.

He received another UFC victory and defeated a tough guy, but he still needs a signature victory to get his name taken to the next level.

Ian Loveland

5 of 24

Hold on Loveland's stock for now.

He fought a great fight considering it was only his first fight at Bantamweight, his second fight in the UFC, and he was matched against one of best bantamweights in the world.

Loveland was threatening with submissions when taken down, but he got taken down too much. He will be back.

Joseph Benavidez

6 of 24

Joseph Benavidez's stock goes up just a little bit.

He is one of the best fighter's in the division, but Loveland, who is a relative unknown, gave him a very close fight.

Loveland also had the closest submissions, but Benavidez's wrestling was the difference.

Joseph still has room for growth, but he showed that he has the fighting IQ to put the fight where it needs to be in order for him to pick up the win.

Kurt Pellegrino

7 of 24

Kurt Pellegrino's stock goes down a little.

This was a good chance for him to take out a highly regarded opponent, but instead gets a consecutive decision loss against top competition.

Kurt had a great second round, but in the third round he seemed to fade, even with the hometown advantage.

He still needs that big win to break through the glass ceiling.

Gleison Tibau

8 of 24

Gleison Tibau's stock goes up just slightly.

Tibau has the physicality and skill set to be a championship fighter, but he cannot rely on closely contested decisions to get there.

Tibau lost the second round pretty big, but to his credit, he came back in the third to get the victory. He is a contender.

Ricardo Almeida

9 of 24

Even though he lost, I have to say Ricardo Almeida's stock stays the same.

On paper, Mike Pyle vs. Ricardo Almeida looked like it could be a stalemate, and that is exactly what happened.

On my scorecard, I had Almeida winning. He landed good strikes standing, pressed the action and landed takedowns.

Close fight that I think could have gone his way.

The scores were announced incorrectly live. The scores were 29-28 across the board for Pyle.

Mike Pyle

10 of 24

Mike Pyle's stock goes up.

It was a close one, but this was the biggest win of the veteran's career.

Even against a world-class grappler like Almeida, Pyle looked like the bigger threat with submissions.

Pyle is now riding a three-fight win streak in the UFC and will be likely getting PPV main card slot in his next fight.

Anthony Njokuani

11 of 24

Anthony Njokuani's stock goes up, despite the loss.

It was a great fight and it won "fight of the night" for a reason.

Njokuani came prepared and pressed the action against his hyped opponent.

That is three losses in four fights, but with performances like that, this is a guy we want to see back in action.

Edson Barboza

12 of 24

Edson Barboza's stock goes up, even though he performed underneath some people's expectations.

It was a tough test as Njokuani was excellent at playing Barboza's own game.

Barboza lost the second round on all three scorecards, but rallied to take the third round and win the fight.

He remains undefeated and a prospect to watch.

Eliot Marshall

13 of 24

Eliot Marshall's stock drops.

Marshall can still become a force in the light heavyweight division, but this first-round loss to Cane really sets him back.

Hopefully the UFC gives him another chance after this fight with Cane did not go his way right from the opening bell.

Luiz Cane

14 of 24

Luiz Cane's stock shoots right back up.

After suffering back-to-back defeats, Cane needed a win, and he got a big one.

Mirko Cro Cop

15 of 24

Mirko Cro Cop's stock goes down.

Mirko looked fit for this fight, but if he is simply too small for the heavyweight division.

Facing one-dimensional fighters who were bigger than him is one thing, but fighting well-rounded guys like Schaub who can muscle him around is not going to work.

If Mirko cannot make it down to light heavyweight, it might be time to retire.

Brendan Schaub

16 of 24

Brendan Schaub's stock goes up.

Winning the first two rounds and then finishing the legend with strikes in the third round is a huge achievement for Schaub.

It was not an easy fight, but Schaub took the fight to Mirko and elevated himself to contender status.

Dan Miller

17 of 24

Dan Miller's stock stays the same.

Miller took this fight on late notice against a top contender and battled gamely to the end.

His guillotine attempts were also the closest that the fight came to being stopped.

He is a great fighter that needs to find out how to break through to the next level, but we already knew that.

Nate Marquardt

18 of 24

Nate Marquardt's stock goes up.

Nate had a lackluster performance in his last fight, and could have tried to just phone in this fight, but he busted Dan Miller up really good.

Despite the close guillotine's from Dan, Marquardt looked more comfortable in Miller's guard than anyone I have seen.

Kamal Shalorus

19 of 24

Kamal Shalorus's stock goes down just a little bit.

It was a big step up in competition for Kamal Shalorus, but he did not utilize his strengths and ended up getting finished for the first time in his career.

Still a tough competitor, Kamal can bounce back but needs an opponent more on his level.

Jim Miller

20 of 24

Jim Miller's stock goes up.

His stock was already pretty high, but this was a brilliant performance from the New Jersey native.

It was his second finish in as many fights, and it was against a durable opponent who had never been finished before.

He is 9-1 in the UFC. It might be hard to keep him out of the top 10 at this point.

Eddie Wineland

21 of 24

Eddie Wineland's stock stays the same.

Wineland won the first round and despite getting out-wrestled in the final two frames, he looked like he was ready to go another round.

Dana White commented post-fight that he likes Wineland, and it is hard not to.

This guy is still a contender.

Urijah Faber

22 of 24

Urijah Faber's stock goes up a little.

It was not an overwhelmingly dominant performance, but Faber got the job done to win his UFC debut and likely secure a title shot.

Mauricio Rua

23 of 24

Mauricio Rua's stock drops.

Rua's accomplishments have cemented him as a legend.

He also proved to have the heart of a champion by fighting through some incredible punishment.

That being said, Rua was unable to find any success against Jon Jones.

Jon Jones

24 of 24

Jon Jones's stock sky-rockets.

He passed the biggest test of his career with flying colors.

Not only did Jones beat the champion, he beat down one of the greatest fighters in the history of the sport, who also happens to be in his prime.

Jon Jones might have just become the new face of MMA.
