UFC 128 Results: Jon Jones Claims He Is "God's Champion" in Post-Fight Interview

Nick CaronMar 20, 2011

UFC 128 saw the crowning of a new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion as Jon Jones crushed the spirit—and the face—of previous champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.

No one is questioning that Jones is now the No. 1 light heavyweight in the world with this most recent destruction of his most difficult opponent to date.

Jones has done enough to prove that he deserves to be where he is from a physical standpoint.

But the mental aspect is still something that seems to be of concern.

In a post-fight interview with UFC.com, an elated Jonny "Bones" Jones expressed his feelings on defeating a legend and becoming the new champion.

"I feel absolutely phenomenal," he began. "It feels very great, and I'm just so grateful and so blessed to be standing here where I am."

A smile came over the new champion's face as reporters surrounded him, hoping for more than the usual post-fight rhetoric that we have all become accustomed to.

The charismatic Jones didn't disappoint.

"I feel as if I'm God's champion," he confidently gloated while readjusting the championship belt draped over his shoulder, "and I have a lot of pride in that."

Jones went on to thank his trainers and continue with his theme of the night about dreams coming true, but the comment about being "God's champion" is an odd one that will certainly be met with some criticism.
