UFC Fight Night 24 Results: Phil Davis Wins but Looks Beatable

Andrew BarrMar 26, 2011

Ever since Jon Jones won the UFC's light-heavyweight championship people have been wondering one thing: who is going to be the man to dethrone Jon Jones?

So far, the general consensus has been Phil Davis, the only man in the division with a wrestling game as dominant as Jones.

However, after UFC Fight Night 24 people are likely to have a lot less confidence in Phil Davis' ability to beat the new champ.

Davis was successful in defeating veteran Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC Fight Night 24, but Phil did not look as dominant as we are used to seeing him.

Davis, who is often able to take guys down at will, had great difficulty taking Nogueira down in this fight. In fact, he was unsuccessful in every take-down attempt in the first round. It wasn't until part-way through the second round that Davis began to have success with his take-downs, switching it up from double-leg attempts to single-leg.

Nogueira is a crafty fighter from the bottom, but Davis handled the Pride legend well, dodging his submission attempts.

Phil also enjoyed some reasonable success on the feet as well, though Lil' Nog also hit him with some good shots.

Ultimately, Phil Davis looked very good in this fight. It was certainly the sternest test of his young career and he rose to the occasion.

That being said, anyone out there who was toting Davis as the man to dethrone Jon Jones has to be doubting now.

We have now seen both men square off against top level competition. Jones made Shogun Rua look like he didn't even belong in the same cage as him. Davis was successful, but didn't look nearly as dominant as Jones.
