NFL Mock Draft 2011: Order Cam Newton and the Top 10 Quarterbacks Will Be Taken
Just a few months ago, Andrew Luck was a lock to be the first quarterback taken off the board and the first overall selection. With the 2011 NFL Draft approaching, that title could go two ways: Cam Newton or Blaine Gabbert.
After Newton and Gabbert, there are a handful of high upside prospects and solid backups in the later rounds.
The NFL Combine is over, and so are many pro days. The draft is looking clearer and clearer as the days go by.
Here is how the top 10 quarterbacks will come off the board in the 2011 NFL Draft.
10. Greg McElroy
1 of 10
Stock Update: McElroy couldn't throw at his pro day because of an injured hand.
He doesn't wow you with his arm or the numbers he produces, but he's an impressive game manager. He'll most likely find a job in the league as a career backup, but a very effective one.
Projection: 183rd overall (sixth round) to the Indianapolis Colts.
9. Nathan Enderle
2 of 10
Stock Update: Enderle is one of the least talked about quarterback prospects in this draft, but he could be a major sleeper.
He has great size at 6'4", 240 pounds and played in a pro style offense in college. He has no major question marks about his decision making and accuracy and has the potential to be a starter in the NFL.
Projection: 154th overall (fifth round) to the Seattle Seahawks.
8. Ricky Stanzi
3 of 10
Stock Update: Ricky Stanzi's pro day is March 21. If he impresses with his arm, he'll sky rocket up the boards, because that's the big thing holding him back.
He definitely has the leadership qualities and football I.Q. to start in the NFL.
Projection: 79th overall to the Miami Dolphins.
7. Andy Dalton
4 of 10
Stock Update: Dalton had a fantastic pro day, completing 49 out of 52 passes with two drops.
Jim Harbaugh of the 49ers attended Dalton's pro day and had to be impressed. It would be a surprise if Dalton fell past San Francisco in the second round with their huge need at quarterback.
Projection: 45th overall to the San Francisco 49ers.
6. Colin Kaepernick
5 of 10
Stock Update: Colin Kaepernick's pro day is March 20. He has the physical tools to be taken in the first round, so an impressive pro day could really up his stock.
Since he stole the show the week of the Senior Bowl, his stock has been on the rise, so it wouldn't be a surprise if that trend continued.
Projection: 43rd overall to the Minnesota Vikings.
5. Jake Locker
6 of 10
Stock Update: Jake Locker's pro day is March 30th. He could improve his stock enough to get looked at by the Seahawks in the first round.
Now, though, he's in danger of falling to the Seahawks in the second, but Mike Shanahan's reported interest in him should stop a fall.
Projection: 41st overall to the Washington Redskins.
4. Ryan Mallett
7 of 10
Stock Update: Ryan Mallett reportedly did horrible during the interview process during the combine. No one doubts his arm, but his character is a different story.
Despite those character concerns, he's too talented to slip past the top of the second round.
Projection: 39th overall to the Tennessee Titans.
3. Christian Ponder
8 of 10
Stock Update: Ponder answered questions about his arm at the NFL Combine, where he performed like the top quarterback there. He followed that up with a great pro day.
He's probably the surest thing at quarterback in the draft.
Projection: 35th overall to the Cincinnati Bengals .
2. Cam Newton
9 of 10
Stock Update: After a poor combine, Newton had a solid outing at his pro day. It was nothing to rave about, though, and will most likely cost him being the first quarterback off the board.
He has a lot of work to do, but his potential will get him drafted very high.
Projection: Third overall to the Buffalo Bills.
1. Blaine Gabbert
10 of 10
Stock Update: Gabbert showed scouts why he's the top quarterback prospect in the 2011 draft class at his pro day, where he went 47-50 with two drops. He's big, he's fast, can make all the throws and he's accurate, at least when there's no pass rush or coverage.
Sam Bradford had a similar pro day last year, and look where he was selected.
Projection: First overall to the Carolina Panthers.
