James Kirkland and Luis Ramos Jr. Pick Up Wins to Extend Undefeated Records

First LastMar 18, 2011

From the Orange County Fairgrounds in California, Golden Boy Promotions presented two bouts featuring undefeated boxers, James Kirkland (25-0) and Luis Ramos Jr. (18-0) The bouts were broadcast on Telefutura.

James Kirkland defeats Jhon Berrio via KO in round two.

The first round was what was expected, but without the knockout. Kirkland came out firing power shot after power shot, but Berrio hung in there. His six-inch reach advantage didn't help him keep Kirkland at bay.

Round two was the same as the first, with Kirkland throwing vicious hooks and uppercuts early. Berrio went down after getting hit with a straight left. The punch that put him down wasn't flush, but the previous ones were. He stayed down for the count, and the referee waved it off at one minute into round two.

Kirkland returned to the ring for the second time this month after a two-year absence from the sport, which he spent fighting court battles and serving a prison sentence for a firearm charge. He was released in September 2010 after serving half of a 24-month sentence.

He is scheduled to fight on the Marcos Maidana vs. Erik Morales undercard in April. The opponent has not been announced.

Luis Ramos Jr. defeats Jose Hernandez by majority decision.

Hernandez succeeded early in the first round. Ramos showed a varied attack going to the body and head of his relentless opponent.

Ramos started to measure his opponent's punches better in the second round. Hernandez landed several solid uppercuts while the southpaw Ramos connected on right hooks and straight lefts.

Round three started well for Hernandez after he landed a flurry on Ramos against the ropes. Ramos showed his toughness by walking through everything Hernandez threw at him. The counter right hook worked well for Ramos.

Ramos's jab carried him through the fourth round, but Hernandez still managed to land power punches whenever he got inside.

Ramos displayed more of his boxing skills in the fifth and sixth rounds, countering with hooks and body shots as Hernandez jumped inside to land power shots.

Hernandez landed a right straight in the seventh that snapped Ramos' head back. Ramos took over late in the round to return the favor, landing straights and several hard jabs of his own.

The eighth and final round of the junior-welterweight bout was back-and-forth as both fighters looked to get a big finish in a very entertaining fight.

The judges scored it 76-76, 79-73 and 77-75 for Luis Ramos Jr.
