Aaron Rodgers May Not Be Able to Repeat Stellar Year out of the Pocket

Joye PruittMar 19, 2011

These statements are not coming from any place of hate or disdain for the Green Bay Packers. He is an elite quarterback and deserves every piece of attention he received before and after his Super Bowl win.

I was more so impressed because people began to deflect from the Favre elephant in the room and focus more on the future of Green Bay football, which will definitely not have Brett in the front office or shaking hands with the owner anytime soon.

However, I am not so sure that Rodgers will be as successful out of the pocket in the upcoming season as he has been in the past.

His feet were doing most of the work for him, and even though he has a very accurate and strong arm, the doubt remains that he will be able to gain as much yardage with the defensive coaches and players on each team catching onto his game.

Quarterbacks like Ben Roethlisberger are able to be so successful getting out of the pocket and buying himself time because of his size.

He is so large that it takes more than one person to take him down and when a defender grabs a hold of him, he just shakes them off like leaves from a tree and does a little footwork to get the ball out of his hands and down the field.

Michael Vick has always been a run-first QB, but he has that unheard of quality of speed, and it is almost necessary for him to be on the run because of his small stature. Vick cannot see over his defenders half the time, so what other choice does he have but to pass on the go?

Rodgers, on the other hand, as productive as he has been, has been trapped and tossed a few concussions which cost his team. When he faces the defensive lines next season, all someone has to do is catch him on a field read, distracted, and attack.

Concussions are becoming more of a big deal in the NFL, especially with a majority of the problems in these labor negotiations are based around the players' health.

Expect him to use his feet still, but also to rely on his performance more so as a quality passer to get his team into the red zone and to victory.

Why would he still run like a track star when he has James Stark performing at such a high professional level?
