Grant Hill, Tiger Woods, Tony Hawk and Today's Swagger Buzz

Gabe ZaldivarJun 7, 2018

Grant Hill, Tiger Woods, Tony Hawk and Today's B/R Swagger Buzz are here, and really, you should be thanking your lucky stars it is.

In this day and age, there is no guarantee that you will have a good time. Unless of course we are talking about the Swagger Buzz. Here we will take you on a raucous journey through the land where sports meet popular culture.

I will be your guide, Gabe Zaldivar. Please keep your hands and feet in the tram as we putter along.

Tony Hawk is still in the news, and he is still getting a divorce from wife number three. You bet your crumpled bracket we have more information and a life's worth of opinion for you on that subject.

The Beckhams have a bun in the oven. They are also pregnant with a little girl. The sports world's royal couple could not get anymore perfect. Well, maybe if David Beckham did not look so old in the Galaxy's season opener Tuesday night.

Then there is Grant Hill. The man that was derided on the "Fab Five" documentary by former NBA player Jalen Rose, has a response. I will be sure to break it down for you.

All of this and more await you inside. The day is beginning to look up already, isn't it?

You know what, don't answer that.

Grant Hill: Suns Forward Has an Answer for Jalen Rose and the Fab Five

Grant Hill Pens a Thorough Response to Claims Made in ESPN's "The Fab Five"

ESPN released their latest documentary to coincide with the NCAA Selection Sunday celebration. The Fab Five followed the rise and steep fall of Michigan's famous freshman.

I have to say that I enjoyed it. It brought back fond memories. I remember asking my mom to buy all of my socks in black. There has never been a hit on the white socks market like that since.

There was one person that found exception with a great deal that was presented in Sunday's airing. That man was Grant Hill. He was the target and personification of success in regards to the Duke Blue Devils. He was called out numerous times in the documentary.

Jalen Rose, the film's executive producer, referred to Grant Hill and other Duke players as Uncle Toms. Well, Hill did not sit idle. He got busy writing and has released his response in the form of a column released by the New York Times.

Hill is measured, yet passionate in his response. Here are some excerpts taken from the article:

"It was a sad and somewhat pathetic turn of events, therefore, to see friends narrating this interesting documentary about their moment in time and calling me a bitch and worse, calling all black players at Duke “Uncle Toms” and, to some degree, disparaging my parents for their education, work ethic and commitment to each other and to me."

"This is part of our great tradition as black Americans. We aspire for the best or better for our children and work hard to make that happen for them. Jalen’s mother is part of our great black tradition and made the same sacrifices for him."

"I caution my fabulous five friends to avoid stereotyping me and others they do not know in much the same way so many people stereotyped them back then for their appearance and swagger. I wish for you the restoration of the bond that made you friends, brothers and icons."

"I am proud of my family. I am proud of my Duke championships and all my Duke teammates. And, I am proud I never lost a game against the Fab Five."

I can't state with certainty what was going through the minds of Jalen Rose, or Grant Hill for that matter, during the rise of the Fab Five. Growing up as a Mexican-American in Southern California precludes me from making assurances to that nature.

I can say that Hill was right to respond in the way that he did. I think that Rose and the rest of the Fab Five in the film were generalizing on feelings that they had as freshmen and sophomores at Michigan.

However, it is important for young people to see what a well thought out argument looks like. This is how you debate. This is how you respond.

Tiger Woods: Golfer Says Little in Tight Wire Jimmy Fallon Appearance

2 of 10

Tiger Woods Chuckles and Stays Tight-Lipped on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon"

We knew it would be awkward, but we never thought it would border on yawn inducing. Tiger Woods took to Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. The legendary golfer was back to late night. His trials and tribulations would be on television for millions to see.

That is when the dance started. The two skipped and skirted around the issue without specifically making reference to it. The interview started with promise.

Fallon asked Woods what he had been up to. Woods replied with, "playing bad golf." Hilarious. It was a rare joke from a usual statue in Woods. Please savor that one folks. It may be a while before Woods exercises his funny bone.

Fallon then hit Woods' recent divorce and affairs head on, sort of. "Thank you for having the courage to come on a late-night comedy program, because it must have been a painful and awful situation, the whole thing you went through. But from a comedian's standpoint and my monologue writers, thank you! So much! It kind of wrote itself. I mean, balls, shafts, holes, foursomes. It really writes itself. Thank you! Thank you!"

That is when Woods forced a chuckle. The rest of the interview was all Jimmy Fallon. He tried his best to get the tight-lipped athlete to come out of his shell. But there are few as reserved in their answer as Tiger.

Fallon tried to geek out on Woods' palatial estate. Each query was given a few-word response. That was how most of the interview went. It could have been worse.

Perhaps Woods' issues on the links has to do with his head. One way to solve that would be to come out and talk about his transgressions.

He didn't exactly do that Wednesday night, but it was a start. I don't think Woods can turn his image around over night, but other athletes have come back from equally unsettling personal lives. The only way he does that now is to win.

Golf fans have seen that Woods is a great deal off from doing that. He is also a great deal off from being an entertaining late night guest as well.

Tony Hawk: Skateboard Legend Is Not Without His Belmishes in Recent Divorce

Tony Hawk Has Divorced Wife Number Three and Takes Up With Best Friend's Wife

Legendary athletes are human. That is one thing that gets lost amidst the high scoring, high flying antics of the sports world's elite. Sometimes we place them on a pedestal morally because their physical gifts are so remarkable.

But these people are just people, with better physical abilities. Their wants, desires and shortcomings are just as numerous as ours. Such is the case of Tony Hawk. The man helmed the rebirth of skateboarding. I remember wanting to ride like him when young, and then buying his video games when older.

He has left an indelible mark on the sports world, but he is not without some personal, emotional scrapes.

Hawk divorced his third wife, Lhotse Merriam, recently. That is only the beginning of the muddy situation. Anytime we see someone with more than one marriage, we gently roll our eyes and shrug it off as a sign of the times.

Hawk has amazed even me with his latest antics. He left his third wife for the wife of his best friend Matt Goodman.

Goodman was married to his wife Cathy for 20 years. They also have two kids together. Now I tread cautiously as I am not remotely tied to this family. However, there are plenty of fish in the sea. A good portion of them are not married to a best friend.

There are some boundaries that you hope are never crossed. Such is life. That is all I can really take from a story like this. A childhood hero is merely a gifted athlete and nothing more. That is very hard to remember sometimes.

I will gladly take this as a reminder that we shouldn't laud these sports figures as heroes, merely people, and nothing more.

Victoria Beckham: David Beckham and Wife Expecting a Little Girl

4 of 10

Victoria Beckham is All Set To Welcome Baby Girl Into World

There are not many high profile families that stick together. If you don't believe me, please see my previous article on Tony Hawk's latest relationship status. The Beckham's are the pinnacle for family stability in the world of celebrities. How is that for a mind blow?

Victoria and David recently found out that they will welcome a baby girl to their family. It comes as a surprise to a family that has three boys in their litter.

David Beckham, midfielder for the Los Angeles Galaxy, took to the airwaves with Ryan Seacrest on Tuesday. He relayed his sentiments on expecting an infant. "It’s something obviously we hoped for, but obviously when you have a baby you kind of just think as long as it’s healthy...[then] that’s all you worry about."

Spoken like a true father. How refreshing.

The couple that has it all can still be surprised by the special moments in life. Beckham continued, "When we went to have the 3-month scan they said, ‘Oh, it looks like a boy,’ and we were like, ‘Oh, great, we’re going to have another boy. Then we went back and they were like, ‘Actually, it’s a girl.’ The emotion hit us, and…it’s amazing!”

I am starting to get a bit freaked out to how normal and average this David character seems. He could be any father in the world, not the most recognizable soccer player.

David is in his final years as a soccer player. You could tell that his age may be catching up to him in his season opener against the Seattle Sounders on Tuesday. He seemed sluggish and gassed.

However, I am confident that David and Victoria have a great many things to keep them occupied in retirement, namely their four children.

Pac-12 Logo: The New Logo Is Fine but Can We Lose the New Ad That Goes with It?

5 of 10

Pac-12 Logo is Here in a New Ad and It is A Tad Loud

Oh boy. Where do I start. I guess the beginning is as good a place as any. As many of you know, the Pac-10 will soon welcome two distinguished universities into their fold. The Pac-10 will soon be the Pac-12.

Now, when releasing the new logo, you want to catch people's attention. However, you don't want to bash them over the head, scream in their ear and stick a strobe light in their room. That would be overkill. That is what the Pac-12 ad is doing to me currently.

I recommend you watch it if you feel like having your face melted clean off your head. The video starts off on the right foot. There are pictures of various students that may or may not be athletes from the various schools.

The producers then told them to act as lame as humanly possible. I mean I am a little fearful of my own cool status having attended Cal. Do I have to take my cool card back to where I received it? Or will they be knocking on my door at any minute?

I was half expecting an overlay to drop, "the Pac-12, where goofy silliness takes place."

Granted, not a very catchy slogan, but appropriate I think. I have not even started on the song. It's not just horrible, it's benign, cheesy, cookie-cutter and horrible. It is the same song I would expect if you were about to have a rave, but a sensible, good-natured, drug-free one.

Welcome Colorado. Welcome Utah. We are so happy to see you that we just may burst a rainbow right open and pour it all over sunshine rays. Then we will take a dab of joy and mix it with cheer.

Look, I have a rough enough time keeping down solid food items on the weekend. I don't need the Pac-12 to induce nausea on a Wednesday.

I will now give up shotgunning Red Bulls and 5-Hour Energy. All I need is to play this at top volume on a continuous loop. Perhaps I should check with my neighbors first.

Snooki WWE: Jersey Shore Star May Have Just Found Her Calling in Life

6 of 10

Snooki Takes On WWE Monday Night Raw, I Finally Get the Hype

I have stated before that I am no fan of the Jersey Shore. I may be the last human that has not taken that leap. If I wanted to see people with no talent make millions on television, I will turn on a Sacramento Kings game.

I do have to say that I have turned the corner in regards to Snooki. The diminutive reality star became the diminutive wrestler this past Monday. She was a guest host on WWE Monday Night Raw. Her hosting duties took an unexpected turn—or expected depending on how old you are.

Snooki was ringside when Michelle McCool decided to rough her up. As McCool stood on the ropes, Snooki grabbed her feet and yanked her to the mat. She then barreled into the ring and dropped Layla to the ground.

She then started ramming her head into the mat. It was at that point that I sighed and muttered, "okay, now this is actually entertaining."

I gladly don't have to wish Snooki back into the ring. She will make an appearance at the upcoming WrestleMania as part of a six-person tag team.

Well thank God for small mercies. Seeing just a glimpse of the wild fire that is Snooki has me thinking that this could be her second career. When she is done getting paid for doing nothing on Jersey Shore that is.

I am actually excited about the possibilities here. Snooki as a Diva, I never thought I would smile at the thought of Snooki doing anything.

NCAA Tournament: Buzzer Beaters and Late-Game Drama Abound in March Madness

7 of 10

NCAA Tournament Has Already Given Us Some Exciting Finishes

Every sports fan has their favorite postseason. For some, it is the Super Bowl. For others, it is the World Series. You have to admit, there is something for everyone at the NCAA tournament lovingly referred to as March Madness.

The best part of sports is that anything can happen. There is always a chance for an underdog to get over on a favorite. There is always a chance for a fantastic finish. It rarely happens in other sports. You sometimes have to wait days or weeks for a memorable finish.

This is not true in March.

We are only a few games into the NCAA tourney, and we already have some heart-stopping moments to keep us happy until tomorrow.

Morehead State pulled off an epic upset against Louisville. It took a late clutch shot from Demonte Harper followed by a tremendous stop by Kenneth Faried.

That wasn't the only great game. West Virginia narrowly escaped a hard-hitting Clemson team. It took a couple of late steals from a backup guard, Dalton Pepper, to seal the win.

We were then treated by a couple of late buckets in the Penn State versus Temple game. When all was said and done, it was Juan Fernandez' late off balance shot that took Temple to the next stage.

We are only a few games in, but the margin of victory averages to just over two points a game. Could this be one of the most exciting years ever? There is no way this madness keeps up. If it does, I will be one happy camper.

Matt Kemp: Los Angeles Slugger Refuses To Dance to Rihanna Songs

Matt Kemp Sits Out The Party As Soon As Rihanna is Played

We have all been there at some point. Your wondrous affair with a beautiful woman ends abruptly. For the next few months, even the slightest mention of her name sends chills down your spine. There is no way of getting around it. Breakups suck.

Imagine if the girl you were dating was a popular singer. Imagine if her joints were blaring from every stereo and club scene. Are you imagining? I need you on board for this one, I really do.

This is the plight of Dodgers slugger Matt Kemp. The center fielder was dating pop icon Rihanna until they broke it off completely last December. The New York Post has released some startling news. Matt Kemp doesn't dance.

Well, he doesn't dance to Rihanna songs anymore. The story reads, "In Las Vegas for a preseason game Sunday, Kemp spent Saturday night dancing on a banquette in the downstairs Boom Box Room at club Marquee. But as soon as DJ Eric D-Lux switched to Rihanna's "Cheers," a witness told us, "Matt immediately sat down and stuck his hand up in defiance to the song."

As soon as the song ended, he was back to shaking his tail feather. I feel bad for Matt Kemp, I really do. However, I am excited about the prospect of a Rihanna-free season.

I feel like Rihanna was Barbara Hershey's character in The Natural. She completely sucked the talent right out of Kemp's jersey. There were times last season where I genuinely thought he forgot how to play.

At one point, I screamed for the Dodgers to get this guy an operations manual. I don't think they heard me as my mouth was stuffed with a Dodger Dog at the time.

So chin up there Kemp. A productive season devoid of distractions is ahead of you. That makes this Dodger fan extremely happy.

Dallas Clark Goes Hollywood with Appearance on Criminal Minds

Dallas Clark Lands Spot on TV Series While NFL Season Looms in Doubt

Life must be tough for NFL vets right about now. I imagine they putt around the house in a robe with nothing to do. Their wives are beginning to get irritated with their constant presence. Maybe it is time to get a job. You know, one that actually exists.

As the players decertify and the NFL goes to court, players look to keep their minds off of a potentially lost season. Colts tight end Dallas Clark found something he might be interested in.

Clark will appear in an upcoming episode of Criminal Minds. He told the Sporting News the beginning of his budding stardom.

"I met Rick Dunkle, one of the show’s writers, at a Jacksonville game last season.  He was telling me how he’s from Indiana and how he’s a big Colts fan. I was like, 'If there’s ever a shortage of actors out there in Hollywood, give me a call.' We kind of laughed about it. Now, I’m flying out to L.A. to shoot a scene."

All of you aspiring actors take note. All you need to do is play in the NFL and they just hand over acting work. Clark actually wouldn't mind expanding this to a more full role down the line.

"I have two lines. That might be the beginning AND end of my acting career. Hopefully, I impress someone and get a call back...If I stink, they can cut me out. If I’m good, maybe it will open up some doors."

The NFL situation is not a good thing. It seems some NFL players are making lemonade in their newfound off time. Even Ravens safety Tom Zbikowski found an outlet. He is living out his passion for boxing.

I guess when the going gets tough, find a new hobby.

GQ Magazine Releases List of the Worst Fans in America, Don't Shoot the Messenger

There are athletes, and there are fans. One party excites us or lets us down. It is the fans duty to cheer, boo and attend. The fact is, some fans just don't get it. They can sometimes be overzealous or prone to fits of bandwagon-ism.

This is where GQ Magazine comes in. The men's mag has recently released a run down on the most awful fans in sports. These are the fans we all love to hate, or happen to be a part of as it were. You can view the slideshow in all its glory here.

Let me state right off the bat that I agree with the start of their article. I am a lifelong Lakers fan, and I can tell you first hand that we suck. We show up late to games, watch all the celebs, then quietly clap during an exciting game.

Nothing seems to excite the group at Staples Center, and that has been the bane of my Lakers fandom. The list goes on from there.

The top five goes down like this:

5. University of Maryland Basketball

reason: frequent fits of rioting

4. Oakland Raiders

reason: criminals and thugs abound in the stands

3. West Virginia Mountaineers

reason: frequent fires set after wins

No. 2  and No. 1 are owned by the Philadelphia Eagles fans and their Phillies counterparts respectively. The reason is simple. I will use author Adam Winer's words exactly. They are "the meanest fans in America."

You may want to vilify such an article but come on people. We are all adults. We know who we are. Just as I accept that Lakers fans are horrible at creating an exciting atmosphere, you have to agree that most of this slide show is spot on.

I'm just glad that for once I will not be reading the hate mail.
