Portland Trailblazers: Home of the Three Goggles Phenomenon

Joye PruittMar 16, 2011

When you have the Wall Street Journal commenting on you, that is a sign that you truly have made it as far as relevance and property value goes.

What started out as a taunt between teammates has turned into a phenomenon resulting in clothing, glasses and the attention of the NCAA basketball players who are avid practitioners of the three goggles as well. It was so interesting to figure out where it actually came from that I wanted to share it with you all, in case there are still people in the world who do not know.

Rudy Fernandez has a problem seeing things that are not within a reasonable distance. Not that he needs glasses, but when it comes to focusing on things that are far away, he fails.

As many Portland fans already know, Fernandez has tossed up half of the three goggles symbol over his head after hitting a three-pointer before. However, the quick-witted Patty Mills put the signs up over his eyes to tease Fernandez for his vision, or lack thereof. It spread throughout the team and before you knew it, the whole world was taking part in what was simply supposed to be a little fun between Mills and Fernandez.

Last night during the Mavericks and Trailblazers game, we saw a lot of the goggles being put up by Wesley Matthews, who hit his first four three-point field goals. Staying in a game where the opposition hits their first eleven shots is virtually impossible, but Roy and LA carried their team to the victory as the fourth quarter clock winded down.
