NFL Draft 2011: What Should the Denver Broncos Do with the No. 2 Overall Pick?

John RozumMar 15, 2011

For a while here at Bleacher Report, us Denver fans have been debating what the Broncos should do with the second overall pick.

Assuming the Carolina Panthers draft Cam Newton (like some media outlets and so-called "draft experts" have said), the Broncos definitely need to go defense.

Now, this is where the debating begins.

In 2010 the Broncos ranked 25th in pass defense (allowing 236 yards per game) and 31st in rush defense (154 yards per game).

So should they fix the run defense first or the pass defense?

The tricky thing is that a good run defense helps the pass defense, and vice versa.

Also, one thing to take note of is that new head coach John Fox runs a 4-3 front as opposed to a 3-4 front.

With that being said, what should Coach Fox and VP John Elway do?

Well, for starters, let's take a gander at who Denver has coming back on defense for 2011.

As of now, we see DTs of Jamal Williams and either Justin Bannan or Kevin Vickerson.

Chances are whoever plays DT, the other will play DE unless Elvis Dumervil and Robert Ayers both move to DE.

Then, if the Broncos draft either DT Marcell Dareus from Alabama or Nick Fairley from Auburn, Bannan or Vickerson could immediately become backups.

However, if Denver keeps a rotation between Bannan, Vickerson, Williams, Marcus Thomas and Ryan McBean for DT, then Ayers and/or Dumervil could become the starting DEs.

Therefore, we may see Denver look at either CB Patrick Peterson from LSU or OLB Von Miller from Texas A&M.

Now, before we head to the secondary, what if Denver decides to draft either DE Da'Quan Bowers from Clemson or Robert Quinn from North Carolina?

If that happens, then Ayers and Dumervil will most likely stay as OLBs and Von Miller goes elsewhere.

So we move to the secondary, where Denver arguably needs just as much help.

With rumors of Champ Bailey wanting to move to safety, that potentially leaves half of the field open.

Enter Patrick Peterson.

There's an already been aging for the last five years Brian Dawkins (whom we all still love), and whether we want to admit it or not, Champ is aging as well.

Peterson can take away half the field and force offenses to run the rock.

Regardless of who Denver drafts, one thing is for sure: There will be immediate improvement to that specific area.

So, Denver fans, whom should the Broncos draft with the second overall pick?
