Nebraska Football: Right Conference at the Right Time? It's Husker Time!
Larry Burton (Syndicated Writer)
You don't have to be a Nebraska alumni or fan to know that Texas had made playing in the Big 12 unbearable for the Huskers. They left for that and other reasons, and the timing couldn't have been better.
Little did they know when they initiated this move that Michigan would still be years away from coming back to full strength, that Penn State would still be rebuilding and that Ohio State would have an internal meltdown that could cause problems to the program that no one is sure about.
Nebraska made the right move to the right conference at the right time. They could come in and dominate in the early years of their membership here, and that could help them in many ways.
First of all, recruiting could be influenced as recruits see that Nebraska could bring them conference championships and BCS games as easily as any other school.
The Big Ten Network will give them more exposure than they would have gotten in the conference where Texas not only calls all the shots, but is only worried about Texas.
Plus, the Huskers are entering a league woefully short on defense, and the "black shirts" could dominate the defensive statistics of that conference with very little luck needed.
If Nebraska can just get the offense rolling they could conceivably win the title in just their first year.
The staff at Nebraska may have indeed guided them to the promised land, but, of course, only time will tell. One thing you can be sure of however, is the days will be brighter, the television exposure will be better and there will be less ulcers in dealing with the rest of the Big Ten administration than they had dealing with Texas.
