NFL Draft 2011: Full New York Jets Mock Draft

Zachary CohenJun 7, 2018

Another disappointing loss in the AFC Championship has the Jets wondering just how close they are to winning their first Super Bowl under Rex Ryan. The Jets are a defensive-oriented, run-first team that is always capable of making a playoff run.

A lot of the Jets' questions next year will be on the shoulders of quarterback Mark Sanchez and how he progresses in his third year in the green and white. Another area where the Jets can really make a splash is the draft, where they have had a lot of success in recent years.

The Jets have five picks in the 2011 NFL draft, and here is how I expect them to be used.

Round 1, Pick 30

1 of 5

Marvin Austin (DT, North Carolina)

I think the Jets are going to surprise a lot of people and take Marvin Austin in the first round of the draft. The Jets need depth on the defensive line, and Austin can provide that. He fills a big need as a big guy with great pass-rushing ability.

Austin was suspended last season, which is why he isn't a sure first-round pick right now. He is easily a first-round talent, and I expect a coach like Rex Ryan to be the one to take a chance on him. Ryan is a players coach and will be able to crack Austin's potential.

The Jets may go for a safety here if the right one is available, but I can't see them passing up on such a talented young pass rusher who put up as good of a combine as he did last week.

Round 3, Pick 94

2 of 5
LOUISVILLE, KY - SEPTEMBER 05: Johnny Patrick #19 of the Louisville Cardinals runs with the balll after intercepting a pass during the game against the Indiana State Sycamores at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium on September 5, 2009 in Louisville, Kentucky.

Johnny Patrick (CB, Louisville)

The Jets put a tender on Antonio Cromartie, so it looks like he will be back in green next year, as I can't see any teams out there that would be willing to give up a first- and third-round pick to get him. With Revis and Cromartie, the Jets don't need a stud corner, but more so a glue guy that can take team's third receivers out of games.

Kyle Wilson may be good someday, but last year was proof that he isn't ready to step in and do the job we need him to do yet. With this pick I like Patrick out of Louisville. Patrick isn't going to be a star in this league, but he can be a good third corner and can come right into the league and contribute. Patrick didn't wow anybody at the draft combine, but he had five interceptions in his senior year at Louisville, and there comes a point in any draft where production just simply can't be ignored.

Round 4, Pick 125

3 of 5

Jeron Johnson (S, Boise State)

The Jets are in need of a safety, and although it's not likely they find the answer to that problem this late in the draft, picking a guy who was able to produce at such a high level in college definitely couldn't hurt. Johnson was a little disappointing his senior year, but in his sophomore and junior years, he made a total of seven interceptions.

Johnson is a good open-field tackler and he could be a nice piece for Rex Ryan to work with for a few years. Johnson could be an interesting option come the second day of the NFL draft.

Round 5, Pick 158

4 of 5
ATLANTA - DECEMBER 31: Wide receiver Denarius Moore #6 of the Tennessee Volunteers hauls in a second quarter pass while defensive back Devon Morgan #2 of the Virginia Tech Hokies tries to cover him during the Chick-Fil-A Bowl at the Georgia Dome on Decem

Denarius Moore (WR, Tennessee)

The Jets are going to have trouble hanging on to their nice group of wide receivers the next couple of years, so I expect them to draft a big guy like Moore late in the draft and try to develop him. Moore is 6'2'' and weighs 194 pounds with the ability to go up and make plays deep down the field. Moore caught 47 passes last season for 981 yards and nine touchdowns. That type of production available late in the draft will be intriguing to a team like the Jets, who can afford to work with a player for a few years and not lose a step.

Round 6, Pick 189

5 of 5
AUSTIN, TX - NOVEMBER 07: Tight end Greg Smith #83 of the Texas Longhorns runs with a catch against the UCF Knights on November 7, 2009 at Darrell K Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas. Texas won 35-3. (Photo by Brian Bahr/Getty Images)

Greg Smith (TE, Texas)

This late in the draft, I can see the Jets going for another tight end with better blocking ability. The Jets already have Dustin Keller, but everybody knows that his presence on the field is as more of a slot receiver than a tight end.

Smith is 6'4'' and weights 250 pounds. His presence on the offensive line as both a blocker and a receiver could someday take some pressure of Sanchez. It's the Jets' last pick of the draft, so picking a guy who down the road can help the team on the offensive line for their young quarterback would be big.
