MMA Great Debate: In a Brock Lesnar vs. Alistair Overeem Fight, Who Wins?

Sal DeRoseMar 16, 2011

It would be a huge fight. Strikeforce champion versus a ex-UFC champion who some believe could be holding the belt again this year. Brock Lesnar versus Alistair Overeem in a Strikeforce versus UFC showdown.

Talk always comes up about whose heavyweight division is better. Overeem, Fabricio Werdum, Antonio Silva and Fedor Emelianenko versus the likes of Lesnar, Cain Velasquez, Junior dos Santos and Shane Carwin.

Wouldn't that be a great cage match?

Anyway, here we will settle the debate, breaking down the ways to each fighters keys to victory.

In an epic showdown of Overeem and Lesnar, who comes out victorious?

This ends up being a really tough test for the former UFC heavyweight champ, Brock Lesnar.

For the first time in his short MMA career he's facing someone who neutralizes his biggest advantage, his size.

Lesnar and Overeem are near identical when it comes to their size so unfortunately for Lesnar, his best chance comes in his wrestling.

Standing with Overeem spells disaster for Lesnar. Overeem is a great kickboxer and will dominate the stand-up game. Lesnar's striking isn't the best and definitely can't hang with Overeem.

Brock should take this fight to the ground and try and grind out Overeem for the victory. The toughest part is yet again, the size advantage. It won't be an easy time on the ground for Lesnar, but if he brings his A game, he can definitely give Overeem a run for his money and get the W at the end of the fight.

How Overeem Wins

3 of 4

Like it was said in the Lesnar slide, Overeem is a great kickboxer. His striking is superior to that of Lesnar and is definitely the gameplan going in.

Overeem should look to keep Lesnar standing and in doing so, taking advantage of one of Brock's biggest weak points.

If Overeem can keep Lesnar standing, there is little to no chance Lesnar can pull this off. Lesnar's chin and striking seriously hamper him here.

Even if the fight were to go to the ground Overeem could still be able to neutralize the wrestling of Lesnar. Overeem's takedown defense should be able to neutralize the Lesnar takedown attempt.

With size advantage gone, Overeem should definitely be able to keep the fight standing and give himself a great shot to beat the once great UFC champion.

Prediction

In the end only one can prevail in this epic showdown of Strikeforce champion and former UFC champion.

Without his size advantage, Lesnar has very little to work with against Overeem. Either way Lesnar faces an uphill battle where he will have to be at the very top of his game.

Overeem has been great since making his move to heavyweight in 2007 and has amassed a record of 10-1-0 with one no contest. None of his wins have gone past the first round.

That's scary for Lesnar to think about and it would be a great fight to watch to see these two huge heavyweights duke it out.

Overeem will keep the fight standing and send Lesnar out dreaming.

Prediction: Overeem by second round TKO
