Brandon Meriweather Update: Safety Acted as Peacemaker, Not Shooter, Reports Say
It appears that earlier reports suggesting New England Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather had shot two men in an incident in his hometown of Apopka, Florida are not only false, they also paint the player's actions completely incorrectly.
Information has been trickling out throughout the day regarding the Feb. 27th incident, and a much clearer picture of the events is now unfolding.
According to a relative of Meriweather who spoke with the Boston Globe, the Patriots player was actually trying to break up a fight between two of his cousins when gunshots began to ring out. The witness even goes on to name another suspect in the shooting–one Anton Massey.

One of the gunshots reportedly nearly missed Meriweather as he jumped into the scuffle. His relative insists "Brandon had no influence on the fight and didn't have a gun on him."
Meriweather's attorney has indicated that police are now investigating "alternative shooters" and expect to interview his client in the coming days.
"Obviously, we're confident that everything is going to work out," said his attorney.
In just a matter of hours, the 27-year-old has gone from the public's lead suspect to a peacemaker in the violent situation. There are still a lot of unknowns regarding why the fight broke out, how it led to a shooting, and just how Meriweather originally got himself involved in the situation.
Only time will tell how this situation works out, but for now, though, it appears as if Meriweather's actions were not only misreported, but completely falsified.
