NFL Draft 2011: Cam Newton Pro Day Extravaganza

Sal DeRoseMar 9, 2011

It's been just a little over two months since Cam Newton ended his college career and embarked on his journey to the 2011 NFL Draft.

After a so-so NFL combine performance it was all on Newton's pro day to showcase the skills he needed to bump up his draft stock, and possibly solidify being picked first overall.

Well, his pro day was at least better than his combine performance.

Yesterday he nailed 50-of-60 throws after an abysmal 11-of-21 at the combine. According to Rotoworld's Evan Silva, Matt Ryan was 48-for-52 and Sam Bradford was 49-for-50 at their respective pro days.

Newton still has one little problem throwing, when he misses, it's usually too high.

Newton has been talked about constantly as not only a first-round pick, but also as the first overall selection.

Looking at Newton outside of athleticism, it just doesn't seem like he is all that impressive. Yet, Arizona Cardinals' head coach, Ken Whisenhunt, made an appearance at Auburn's pro day over the likes of Arkansas. Basically picking Newton over Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett.

Mallett may not be as athletic as Newton, but he actually can play the quarterback position and nail throws. Mallett has not only showcased his cannon of an arm to scouts and coaches alike, but he hasn't had the accuracy concerns of Newton, just the personal concerns.

Not to take anything away from Newton, he is a great player and could some day be a great NFL quarterback, but in the grand scheme of things, he isn't worthy of the first overall pick. His transition from Auburn's offense to a pro-style offense is a concern and the fact that he isn't a pocket passer is another concern.

In Newton's mind when the first option receiver is covered, it's time to scramble and make something happen. Kind of like Michael Vick before he went to jail with the Deion Sanders type of personality to boot.

Carolina Panthers' head coach Ron Rivera even made an appearance at the Auburn pro day to look at Newton. Not only was Rivera in attendance, but head coaches from the Denver Broncos, Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns were there to watch the dynamic quarterback.

Truth is there is a lot of hype surrounding one player who hasn't wowed anyone yet. Newton hasn't been this spectacular quarterback and I'm still not convinced on him as a solid quarterback in the NFL.

Hype about your potential can only get you so far. Wasting a top ten pick on Newton would be absurd.
