A Good Fight Lies Ahead in the NFC South

Thomas H.Sep 28, 2008

All four teams in the NFC South could feasibly win the division. With each boasting a good or great offense, anything could happen.

The Panthers have always been the .500 team of late, but Steve Smith is looking good and Jake Delhomme is healthy. With Stewart and DeAngelo Williams running, the team has a good offense.

The Falcons are another NFC South team with a strong offense. Rookie Matt Ryan has been showing a good arm and has hit the crosses well. With Michael Turner finally getting his big break on the running side, Ryan has good options. They are currently 2-2, including a win over the Bucs. They aren't just a team of the future, they are a team now.

The Saints are solid gold. They have a defense that isn't holding up as well, but they have a great offense. Marques Colston and Jeremy Shockey are both out, but that hasn't stopped Drew Brees.

With Brees throwing bullets and averaging first in passing yards, the team is happy with him. Meanwhile, Reggie Bush is finally ready to be a good starter, and with Deuce McAllister behind him, he can't go wrong. I like watching this team and I know they will do well after the 2-2 start.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers might have a quarterback problem with both Brian Griese and Jeff Garcia. Griese is getting more of the starting time, even though Garcia led them to the playoffs last year. That might cause a little problem, but we will see.

Earnest Graham is their back, and he has been only average. What they have is the best defense in the division, which gives them a good edge on the others. They have a 3-1 record and are only allowing 314 yards for the other team per game. They have a great front line that hits down the offense, and they are another fun team to watch.

So how is this going to play out? Atlanta has had two hard losses in the division. The Saints' win over Tampa Bay gives hope to them. The Panthers are a good team so far, but it is hard to say whether Delhomme will hold up. Steve Smith has clearly helped the offense.

The division games will show who ends up on top, and right now anyone could win. This is my guess on how they will look at the end of the season:

Team             W            L

Saints          10         6

Buccaneers   10         6

Panthers        8          8

Falcons         7          9

This is how I see it, but the NFC South is a wild division. Anything can happen.
