Philadelphia Eagles: 6 Reasons Mike Kafka Isn't Ready to Be a 2nd String QB
It's becoming more apparent that Kevin Kolb will be a starting quarterback on a team other than the Philadelphia Eagles next season.
If this is the case, it would leave the Eagles with Mike Vick and Mike Kafka as the two quarterbacks on the roster.
After his performance last season, it appears that Vick is back and ready for action.
However, there are many question marks about Kafka, and his ability to be the second string quarterback for Philadelphia.
Here are six reasons why Kafka is not prepared to take over as the backup quarterback in Philadelphia.
1. Unproven in College
1 of 6
While at Northwestern, Kafka only started one full season as the team's quarterback.
That year was 2009, when Kafka was a senior.
He completed 64.8 percent of his passes for 3,430 yards. He also threw for 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
His one full year as a starter in college and produced nothing spectacular.
When the Eagles selected him in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft, it seems the pick was based primarily on Kafka's future potential.
2. One for Four
2 of 6
Kafka participated in all four preseason games in 2010 with the Philadelphia Eagles.
He performed decent in one. The other three were awful.
Against Jacksonville, he completed 42.9 percent of his passes. When facing Cincinnati he completed 33.3 percent of his passes. During the game against New York, when he was the primary quarterback, he completed 33.3 percent of his passes.
During these three games he never threw for over 100 yards. He also threw three interceptions and no touchdowns.
There was one bright spot. In the Kansas City game he completed 69.2 percent of his passes and threw for a touchdown.
There is potential, but Kafka has shown no signs that he is prepared to step in if needed.
3. Weak Arm

Kafka does not have a big arm.
If the Eagles ran a traditional West Coast offense this wouldn't be a problem, but they don't.
With weapons like DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin, the quarterback needs to have a big arm.
The team relies primarily on big plays.
If the quarterback can't get it there, the offense is going to stumble.
4. Vick Is Injury Prone
4 of 6
It's time to face reality. Vick is going to have problems staying healthy.
It comes with the style of game he brings to the table.
Vick is going to take chances, and he is going to get hit.
Last season it didn't seem like a big deal since Kolb was waiting for an opportunity from the sidelines.
Is Kafka really prepared to step in when Vick goes down with an injury?
5. Philadelphia's Offensive Line
5 of 6
The Eagles lost both Kevin Kolb and Mike Vick to injuries last season.
A lot of the blame has to fall on the offensive line.
Any Eagles fan would be quick to point out that the right side of the line was atrocious last season.
Winston Justice was awful when he wasn't injured. When he was, King Dunlap was just as bad, if not worse.
For young quarterbacks, the game moves really fast. If Kafka isn't given adequate protection, there is no chance he is going to succeed.
6. This Is Philadelphia

Randall Cunningham wasn't good enough. Donovan McNabb wasn't good enough. Kevin Kolb wasn't good enough. Soon, Mike Vick won't be good enough.
In the city of brotherly love, the fans aren't quick to show the love to quarterbacks.
There is a lot of pressure on any player who takes the field for the Eagles, especially the quarterbacks.
If Kafka throws one interception, the majority of Philadelphia fans will be calling for the Eagles to sign Jeff Garcia.
The margin of error allowed in Philadelphia is small. For a young quarterback who would undoubtedly have rough patches, the pressure will be extremely high.
