Oakland Raiders: Could Tarvaris Jackson Be Jason Campbell's Backup in 2011?

big ROC Stockton, CAMar 7, 2011

As of right now, Jason Campbell is the only quarterback the Oakland Raiders have under contract.

I've been noticing on a lot of mock drafts that people believe the Raiders should draft a QB and groom him under Campbell. Some even believe they should use their first draft pick (No. 48) on a quarterback, depending on who's available, and that if Ryan Mallett or Jake Locker is there the Raiders should take one of the two.

I wouldn't mind the Raiders drafting a quarterback this year, but they definitely shouldn't use their first pick on one. In fact, they shouldn't use any of their first four picks on a QB.

The Raiders need to use their first pick on a player who can compete for a starting position, not a project they have to sit on for a year or two.

If Oakland does select a quarterback, they shouldn't rely on him to be the No. 2 option. Your backup QB is always one snap away from playing, and a rookie backup isn't exactly the best idea.

A second-string QB should have at least some experience.

You don't want to go from a veteran to a rookie. You want a guy who can run the offense; you don't want to have to cut your playbook in half.

Tarvaris Jackson will be available once the CBA gets resolved, and I think signing Jackson to be Campbell's backup would be a great idea.

Jackson hasn't played a ton of games, but he does have experience and had moderate success with the Vikings when he got the opportunity. He has the strong arm Al Davis loves. He also is very quick on his feet and has the mobility to make something happen when the play breaks down.

Last season, every quarterback on Oakland's roster saw action. Jason Campbell began the season with an injury he suffered in the preseason. He was ineffective through the first game and a half, and was pulled.

Bruce Gradkowski started a few games, but the hits took their toll and Campbell found himself the starter yet again. Later in the year Campbell went down and with Gradkowski already on the shelf Kyle Boller had to play.

He quickly showed why he's a third-stringer.

As of right now, the Raiders don't have a backup quarterback. They can draft a guy, but like I said, having a rookie as your No. 2 option isn't the best idea.

The Raiders need a solid QB to be Jason Campbell's backup. I think signing Tarvaris Jackson would be a great move, giving the Raiders an experienced player who can get things done.

What do you guys think?

Should the Raiders sign Jackson, draft a QB or target a different free agent to be Campbell's backup?
