Randy Moss, Braylon Edwards & 15 Vets Facing Big Paycuts This Offseason
At some point in every great NFL player's career, the time comes where they aren't worth what they're used to making.
For the 15 players in this slide, the time for the harsh reality is now. We're talking about guys like Randy Moss, Braylon Edwards and so many more. If you have any thoughts, as always, leave them below, along with who you think should get a pay cut next year.
If there is anyone I missed, be sure to leave them below and add to the discussion.
No. 15: Chad Pennington
1 of 15
Chad Pennington was a nice comeback story when he helped lead the Miami Dolphins to the playoffs a couple of years ago.
Miami has paid him handsomely since then, even if he hasn't produced much on the field. In fact, Pennington got hurt in two plays of action last year. Pennington is a free agent, and there is no way he makes anything other than the minimum.
If any team gives him more, it's a foolish, reckless move.
No. 14: Cedric Benson
2 of 15
So much for that Cedric Benson comeback.
Following a great season in Cincinnati, Benson went back to being a non-factor as the entire Bengals offense struggled to produce during a terribly disappointing season. Benson made a good deal of cash last year and he won't after last season.
Some team will certainly pick him up though.
No. 13: Kris Jenkins
3 of 15
Kris Jenkins used to be a dominant force on the defensive line.
However, after another knee injury, Jenkins was let go by the New York Jets and if he's going to sign with another team, there is no way he can make the money that he's used to making during his long, productive career.
It's sad, but true. No one is going to take a big risk on an injury prone tackle for a large sum of money.
No. 12: Plaxico Burress
4 of 15
It's been a long, long time since we saw Plaxico Burress on the football field.
Burress has been in jail stemming from the gun incident that sent him to the hospital and that is going to kill any value he has in the free agent market. We've learned that some team will take a chance on a guy like Burress, it's just going to be at a low, low price.
It will be interesting to see how he looks once he hits the field.
No. 11: Ricky Williams
5 of 15
Ricky Williams still has some miles left on his tires, just not for what he had been making.
Williams is going to land somewhere else, but most likely with a deal that has incentives plugged in to escalate the salary based on his performance. He showed against the Tennessee Titans that he can still play, and plenty of teams could use a running back.
Williams will have a job before training camp starts, that's for sure.
No. 10: Ronnie Brown
6 of 15
Well what do you know, it's Ricky Williams' running mate in Miami, Ronnie Brown.
Brown is another guy who saw his production drop this year as the Dolphins struggled to win games. He saw his career take an upward turn with the Wildcat, but that fad has since played its way out of being an effective formation.
Someone will sign Brown, but he better get used to a lighter wallet.
No. 9: Matt Hasselbeck
7 of 15
Matt Hasselbeck's future in Seattle is up in the air, but his price tag should take a bit of a drop.
This isn't the same quarterback that led the Seahawks to the Super Bowl a couple of years ago and everyone knows that. Hasselbeck proved in the playoffs that he has something left to offer as a quarterback.
However, he's not going to make the money he's used to making.
No. 8: Bo Scaife
8 of 15
This may seem a bit odd, but Bo Scaife was making big money.
Scaife was franchised by the Tennessee Titans, meaning he made $4.9 million dollars last year. That's right, Scaife was making big time money to be a player that provided little impact and reduced the playing time Jared Cook got on the field.
Scaife isn't coming back and he'll never see that kind of money again.
No. 7: Braylon Edwards
9 of 15
Braylon Edwards is a feast or famine type of players.
Sometimes, Edwards will make freakishly athletic plays that will blow your mind, and then he'll turn around and drop easy passes that should be caught. Throw in some legal troubles and you've got the recipe to lose money on your next deal.
Edwards will hit free agency, so it will be interesting to see if he stays with the Jets.
No. 6: Santana Moss
10 of 15
Santana Moss is not a number one wideout in this league.
However, he is paid like one and that's the major problem with Moss. He's a talented player who can certainly be an excellent number two in the NFL, and as a free agent, his days of being paid like a top wideout are likely over.
Then again, you never know with a team like Washington.
No. 5: Carson Palmer
11 of 15
If Carson Palmer wants out, he's going to need to take a paycut to do it.
Palmer has made it clear he's not happy with the Bengals and that he wants the team to get rid of him. No team is going to trade for that contract, especially with how poorly Palmer has played at times last season. It's an ugly dispute and it doesn't look like it's getting any better.
Good thing Palmer has $80 million in the bank. He'll need it.
No. 4: Darren Sproles
12 of 15
With Ryan Matthews taking the dominant role in San Diego, Darren Sproles took a backseat.
Sproles was making a good amount of money, $7.28 million last year, but he's never going to see that type of cash again. He's got a lot to give to a team, but he's not a number one running back and you're not going to pay that for a change-of-pace back.
He'll certainly have his suitors once he hits free agency, though.
No. 3: Randy Moss
13 of 15
Remember when Randy Moss made an impact in every game he played?
Well last year was a disaster for the wideout, a season that took us back to his days in Oakland. Moss was traded by the Patriots and waived by the Vikings before landing with Tennessee and making no impact whatsoever.
Moss is going to have to take a major drop in pay wherever he lands next season and lets hope he can make a splash on the field to make more money down the line.
No. 2: Donovan McNabb
14 of 15
Donovan McNabb looked nothing like the quarterback we were used to seeing.
However, the Redskins somehow signed the quarterback to an extension, but it looks like the marriage between the two sides is over after Mike Shanahan benched McNabb for Rex Grossman at the end of the season.
Wherever he goes, it will likely be for less money than he signed on the dotted line for.
No. 1: Vince Young
15 of 15
Oh Vince Young, where do we start with you?
The Tennessee Titans have bailed on the former franchise quarterback, and with good reason. Young had crossed the line one too many times and he hasn't shown any maturation as a person. He isn't a leader and he doesn't command respect from his teammates.
He may think he's an elite quarterback in the NFL, but wherever he ends up next, his paycheck won't reflect that.
