Hey Dana White, While We're Young: Things That Should Have Already Happened

Mike LeanzaSep 28, 2008

I'm back ladies and gentleman, and for my first article in over a week, I'd like to breach a subject that I have yet to see on any MMA sites. It's one that is in the back of everyones mind, even if don't think it is. That subject being, why does it take so damn long for Dana White to give people what they want?

I'd like to start with a very obvious one. This match-up has been in the back of MMA fanatics heads for way too long now. Fedor VS Randy is a more hyped up match-up than Obama VS McCain. Yet at the pace Dana White is going, the election will be over and so will the first term of the winner.

In March 2007 Zuffa bought PRIDE FC and the contracts all the fighters. We're talking Rampage, Wandy, Nog, Hendo and Cro Cop. All of these guys have stepped into the octagon at least once. Rampage has already won, defended and lost the Light Heavyweight title, as well as coached a team of TUF'ers. Hendo has already lost both of his PRIDE titels and rebounded with a win. Nog has won the interim Heavyweight title and has also been chosen to coach a bunch of TUF'ers. Wandy lost the dream match-up with Chuck Liddell in a fight that won FOTN honors, and rebounded with a brutal KO of Keith Jardine. Hell, Mirko has been KO'd and and already released. Yet with all of the things that has happened since the PRIDE buyout, the biggest name has yet to step into the octagon.

Dana White had his chance to sign Fedor, but couldn't quite get the job done. Hopefully with the resigning of Randy Couture, a fire will be lit under Dana to seal the deal before Randy hits the big 5 0.

Next up on the list of "Why hasn't this happened yet" is a meeting between two bitter rivals. Matt Serra VS Matt Hughes.(MATT SERRA HAS SAID IN A RECENT INTERVIEW WITH SHERDOG THAT HE EXPECTS THIS FIGHT TO HAPPEN IN EITH JANUARY OR FEBRUARY) This rivalry goes back to TUF 6 although Serras overall hatred of Hughes probably stems from his stint on TUF 4. Nevertheless, both of these men have expressed much interest in this match-up. Matt Hughes, who wants to retire, has said that he has one more fight left, that being against Matt Serra. This fight was already supposed to have happened. UFC 79 was set to be Matt Serras first title defense since surprising the world at UFC 69.

A herniated disc pulled Matt Serra away from this match, and he was replaced by GSP, with the winner getting to fight Matt Serra. I think we all know the rest. GSP destroys Serra and we haven't seen Matt since. Matt Hughes on the other hand has fought, and lost to Thiago Alves. I'm sorry but I have to call Dana out on this one.

Matt Hughes has said numerous times that he wants to fight Matt Serra, right? So why not just let Matt Hughes keep training and spend time with his family, which he said he wanted to do. No, instead you allow Hughes to go and fight a much younger Thiago Alves. Guess what happens next. Hughes hurts his knee after an awkward landing after the KO and in doing so, lowers Hughes credibility, and forces both 34 year olds, to wait even longer for this fight to happen. Oh, and did I mention that the fans would like to see this one too. Had Hughes stayed out of the octagon, we might already have a date to circle on our calendar, and we might not be questioning whether or not Matt Hughes still has "it".

If you have another "Why hasn't" to name please do so, but here are a few that have happened, that took way too long to happen.

  • Lyoto Machida to fight a credible opponent
  • Wanderlai Silva VS Chuck Liddell
  • Jon Fitch getting a title shot
  • GSP VS Penn 2
  • Shogun making his debut

Dana White will usually put together fights that the fans want, but it always seems like he takes his good old time to do so. Maybe he likes the fans to wait in hopes that the want will get bigger and bigger, or maybe the message gets to him later than we would like it to. I know both of the fights I mentioned will eventually happen, but quite frankly, I'm sick and tired of waiting. You've got a 45 year old man having to fight a bunch of young guys in order to get to his dream fight. Randy isn't getting any younger, and the fans aren't getting any more leniant with time. You also have two 34 year olds waiting to settle a score, one of which wants to retire. Maybe this is why Dana tends to lose older fighters, he doesn't get the whole age thing. He just doesn't get it.

One last thing. I'm looking for a bunch of writers to help me with a big article. I want this article to be the best MMA article this site has seen so I'll need the best writers and any other writers who want to voice there oppinion. The topic is on dream fights. Pick two guys from any organization (mix and match if you want) and from any weight classes. (Please don't write about Urijah VS Fedor, thats too unrealistic) analyze the fight, and pick a winner. Please post a comment on my profile choosing your 2 fighters and then I'll give you my email so you can send me your part. It's first come first serve , so far Jad Semaan has written about Anderson Silva VS Lyoto Machida, so if your interested, pick your fight and tell me asap, don't let somebody else pick your fight.

P.S. I will give Fedor VS Randy to the highest ranked fighter that asks for it. I'm writing about BJ Penn VS Urijah Faber, so thats out
