10 NFL Draft Prospects the Eagles Should Select To Surround Michael Vick
The Philadelphia Eagles had a solid 2010 season. Yes, they lost to the Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers in the playoffs, but Michael Vick is better than every at quarterback and the young offensive talent fits together perfectly.
Nonetheless, Michael Vick is a high-risk quarterback, and could certainly get injured during the course of next season. The Eagles cannot afford to let this happen, especially if Kevin Kolb is in a different uniform. As a result, they need to make moves that help protect Vick in the upcoming draft.
Who are the Eagles looking to target? Here are 10 possibilities for the Eagles to draft in the first two rounds. The list includes defensive players as well as offense despite the title, since the defense needs to make plays so that Vick can do what he does best.
10. Mason Foster, OLB, Washington
1 of 10
Foster is a name you don't really hear about, but after a solid year, he has propelled himself into about the middle of the second round. The Eagles could use some help here, mainly if they don't re-sign Ernie Sims now that he is non-tendered.
Foster should be available when the Eagles select in the second round, and he could even slip into the third round for them. He seems to fit their style of play very well, so he's worth a shot.
9. DeAndre McDaniel, SS, Clemson
2 of 10
Safety is not as big a need as offensive line or linebacker may be, but selecting a safety in the second round would not be a bad idea. Nate Allen is showing promise, but having depth there would especially help.
A second-round pick that seems like it would fit well; DeAndre McDaniel is the top strong safety on the board, and was a tackling machine. He would provide energy to the Eagles' secondary, and could be a viable pick for Philadelphia.
8. Justin Houston, OLB, Georgia
3 of 10
The Eagles could use a force at outside linebacker, as mentioned with the possibility of drafting Mason Foster. Should they decide to want to address that in the first round (which isn't recommended since they should address offensive line issues), then one linebacker fits in perfectly at that 23rd pick.
Justin Houston was a sack machine at Georgia, and while I'm not sure about the fit he would be, you can't go wrong by drafting a guy who could notch double-digit sack totals.
7. Rahim Moore, FS, UCLA
4 of 10
Moore is likely the first safety to go in the NFL draft, and is in that first or second-round bridge. While safety isn't an overly pressing need for the Eagles since they have Nate Allen, it's something they should bolster, and Moore could be that guy.
Selecting Moore might be a reach, so he isn't in the top five options here, but he is the best of the bunch and would contribute on the defense immediately. He can play many different formations, and his versatility is exactly what the Eagles need there.
6. Stefen Wisniewski, G/C, Penn State
5 of 10
Stefen Wisniewski is someone who I thought would be a great fit for the Patriots, but if they decide to pass on him, then he is a great fit for the Eagles as well so that they can bolster their defensive line.
Wisniewski was a standout interior lineman at Penn State, and he can fill right in at right guard, which is perhaps the most important line position to fix for Michael Vick. It's his blind spot, and the Eagles had struggles with that position through 2010.
5. Curtis Brown, CB, Texas
6 of 10
One player whose stock is likely to explode is Texas cornerback Curtis Brown after he had a great combine. He was looking to be an early third-round pick, but he should rise to the middle of the second round, right around where the Eagles pick.
Aside from him being a good need and one of the top players on the board, he seems to be the exact kind of player who would do well in Philadelphia.
4. Derek Sherrod, OT, Mississippi State
7 of 10
I'm not a big fan of Sherrod, personally, and he did not have a good combine. As a result, picking him in the first round would be a stretch. If he's still there for the Eagles in the second round, however, they should pick him up.
Sherrod is a guy who fits perfectly in Andy Reid's scheme, and he can take over immediately in a position of need. If he seems overweight entering training camp, Reid is just the guy to get him into shape, so that should not be much of an issue.
3. Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado
8 of 10
Excluding any offensive line talent, Smith is the top player on the list of people the Eagles should be targeting. A standout from Colorado, he is the top cornerback outside of the two main prospects, and he fits right into the Eagles need for some cornerback depth opposite Asante Samuel.
After the combine, Smith's stock fell as a result of concerns regarding his attitude. Leave it to Andy Reid to tackle that situation, or at least give him a second chance if other teams pass on him. He's certainly a mid-first round talent.
2. Ben Ijalana, OT, Villanova
9 of 10
Ijalana with the 23rd pick may be a bit of a stretch, and I highly doubt he'll fall to the tail end of the second round, but the more I think about him in Philadelphia, the more I like it.
To start off, he's a local product, having played college football at Villanova. He also fits Reid's scheme well, and would fill in nicely on an offensive line that needs help. It's not a pick that sounds great and will get a slew of cheers, but the Eagles will be glad to have made it three years from now.
1. Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin
10 of 10
Were you expecting anyone else? After all, Carimi has been the Eagles' first pick on about 90 percent of mock drafts since December, and there's a reason for that.
Not only has Carimi been a force at Wisconsin, a school with great offensive tackles in the NFL, but he is also the perfect fit for Andy Reid's scheme. Carimi with the 23rd pick almost makes too much sense.
