Saul Alvarez Will Win Manny Pacquiao's Belt Against Matthew Hatton on Saturday

King JMar 3, 2011

On Saturday March 5th, 2011, another new star will be born.

Depending on where you live, in fact, this fighter may already be a big star and he goes by the nickname of "Canelo"—meaning cinnamon in Spanish, because of his red hair, skin color and freckles.

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is one of those fighters who is predestined to become the next big thing in boxing. The hype behind this fighter is unreal—from his native Mexico to the highly populated Mexican-American communities of the United States, many are considering him to be the next Julio Cesar Chavez.

When I was at the Floyd Mayweather vs. Shane Mosley post-fight conference, Oscar De La Hoya spoke about Canelo for 20 minutes before either Mosley or Mayweather emerged from their locker rooms.

Most of the media weren't aware of Alvarez—wondering what this red-haired, Irish-looking kid was doing up by the podium.

When Alvarez then spoke Spanish, the media pretty much gasped and were even more confused.

Fast-forward several months later to the Shane Mosley vs. Sergio Mora fight at the Staples Center and Canelo was on the under card, where he knocked out veteran Carlos Baldomir and caused the sold-out crowd to erupt in hysteria.

For those of you who were not in attendance, Canelo's fans are so passionate, so loud and so hyper that one might think they were being paid to act this way.

A Canelo fan sitting three rows behind me at ringside, for example, would literally scream at the top of his lungs, non-stop: "Canelo! Canelo! Canelo!"

This reached a point where security had to warn him on three separate occasions to stop. The fan was eventually escorted out of the Staples Center—a good 30 minutes after Canelo had fought and left the ring.

Another example came as Canelo left the ring and threw his towel, full of sweat and blood, into the crowd—causing a small riot over who would be the new owner of a towel full of sweat and blood.

These are two clear examples in my eyes that either Canelo's hype is really, really huge—or someone is paying a bunch of poor, middle-aged men to behave this ridiculously for publicity reasons.

Whatever the case may be, this Saturday, Canelo is fighting for Manny Pacquiao's old WBC 154 pound title belt which he gave up after defeating Margarito last November in Arlington, Texas.

Just as many criticized Pacquiao for being able to fight for this 154 pound WBC belt for a few reasons many are also criticizing Canelo for being able to fight Matthew Hatton for the same belt.

Many feel the WBC is overlooking much more deserving, higher-ranked fighters who should have had this opportunity.

Regardless, Canelo will more than likely easily defeat Hatton and grab his first major world title belt and become an even bigger star.

Many are considering this to be a mismatch—saying Canelo will easily knock out the less aggressive younger brother of the more famous Ricky Hatton.

With that being said, Hatton is still in many ways the most legitimate name on Canelo's resume so far outside of an old, past-his-prime Baldomir.

This should be an overall solid card with Daniel Ponce De Leon taking on Adrien Broner and the long-awaited, highly anticipated return to the ring of undefeated American James Kirkland, who'll be taking on Ahsandi Gibbs.

Many including myself were viewing Kirkland to be the next American star to blow up with his exciting fan-friendly all-action style and power to deliver knock-outs. However, now we must see how much of a force Kirkland can still be after serving his time in prison.

We will be live at ringside for this fight come Saturday—so be sure to check back for our live fight update blog.
