World No. 24 Sam Querrey will be out for the first round of the Unites States' Davis Cup matches against host country Chile.
In a statement released on Monday, U.S. captain Jim Courier said, "Sam has been having trouble with his right shoulder and he got an MRI on Friday that revealed a slight impingement in his rotator cuff."
Doctors have advised the right-handed player to rest in preparation for Indian Wells and the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.
Leading the American efforts is No. 8 player Andy Roddick. Completing the team is No. 32 John Isner as well as twins and top-ranked doubles partners, Bob and Mike Bryan. Together, they will take on the Chilean team from March 4-7 in a best-out-of-five matchup.
Going in with a perfect 4-0 record against Chile, the U.S. stands a fair chance with the loss of Querrey.
Last year, the 32-time champion United States lost in the first round to the eventual winning team, Serbia. However, they were able to retain World Group status by defeating Colombia in a World Group playoff in Bogota.
The winner of this round will face either Spain or Belgium in the quarterfinals in July.
