NFL Trade Rumors: Frank Gore & 10 Stars in Their Prime Who Should Be Dealt Now
In order for this article to work we must pretend that their will be a new collective bargaining agreement soon. OK good, now that that's settled let's talk trades.
In the NFL there are guys that have some great trade value that will soon decline. These players for many reasons need to be moved while their price is still high. Some of them fans would hate to see go, but the NFL is business and deals must be made to save money and thrive in the future.
With that said, in no particular order, here a 10 guys that should be dealt now. This doesn't necessarily mean they ever will get dealt, just that it might make sense to move said players.
10. Roy Williams, WR, Dallas Cowboys
1 of 10
The Cowboys have considered cutting him because he is due to make a lot of money of the next few years. However Williams still has some upside and value and Dallas should consider moving him.
Williams won't be number one or number two on the depth chart in 2011. Miles Austin and Dez Bryant have solidified themselves as the best two options for Dallas at the receiver position. Williams' value will continue to decrease the less and less he plays. The Cowboy can pick up a cheaper scrub receiver and late round draft picks to get rid of Williams.
9. Devin Hester, KR/WR, Chicago Bears
2 of 10
Devin Hester is extremely dangerous when teams actually kick to him. Teams used to be afraid to kick him the ball which is why he primarily sticks to punt returns now. However Hester had a great year returning this past season scoring three touchdowns. I know that's not a large number but when returning punts and kicks it is very difficult to take it back to the house.
Hester is a decent receiver at best. He continues to work on that aspect of the game but won't ever be anything special. His speed makes him a great deep ball threat but him actually bringing it in is questionable.
Therefore, it's time for the Bears to deal Hester. Because of his strong showing last season his value is still strong. But within a year or two it won't be this high. Several teams are desperate for a good return game and would be willing to make a deal for the electrifying returner.
8. Ryan Grant, RB, Green Bay Packers
3 of 10
We saw this year just how much the Packers needed Ryan Grant. They missed him at times during the regular season but realistically they were fine without him. After all, they did just win the Super Bowl and he only played in week one.
Grant's value isn't that high right now since he is just coming off an injury, but during the season when he starts to show he can still play it will sky rocket. There are several teams out there that could use a strong running back like Grant.
The Packers did just fine without him this past season and can do the same after they trade him. James Starks and Brandon Jackson got great playing time and experience in 2010 that they can carry the load for the future.
7. Alex Smith, QB, San Francisco 49ers
4 of 10
The former No. 1 draft pick has been a bust in the NFL. Things have not worked out for him in San Francisco and now is the best time for the 49ers to part ways with him.
I know he's a free agent right now, but the 49ers should pull a sign in trade for the quarterback. After all they spent a ton of money on him they should try to get something in return.
At best Smith is worth a fourth round draft pick or perhaps a young quarterback for Jim Harbaugh to groom. Harbaugh will want to find his guy through the draft so the best chance for San Fran to get something for him would be draft picks.
6. Kevin Kolb, QB, Philadelphia Eagles
5 of 10
The value of Kevin Kolb is extremely high right now and if he isn't traded soon teams won't be interested in him much longer. The Eagles may want to keep him for insurance, but because his worth is so much right now Philadelphia needs to pull the trigger on a deal.
There are many teams in dire need of a quarterback to save their team. Kevin Kolb can be that guy to turn a franchise around. Some of those teams aren't willing to give up their first round draft choice like Philly would want and rightfully so. Kolb has never been a full time starter so asking too much is a bit ridiculous. However, the guy does have talent and is a far better option at quarterback than what many teams have.
5. Maurice Jones-Drew, RB, Jacksonville Jaguars
6 of 10
This one may surprise some people but Maurice Jones-Drew should be on the move. He has been a true work horse for the Jaguars the past five years. However the typical career for running backs in the NFL is not very long, especially after they suffer injuries.
MJD went down with a knee injury and recently said he played most of the season hurt. He is signed through 2013 and for a team that doesn't make a lot of money they could afford to get rid of MJD and save them money.
Plus his value is very high right now as he is one of the top five running backs in the league today. We saw at the end of the season Rashad Jennings running really well for the Jaguars. Jacksonville could save money, get great things in return, and start a rebuilding process to try and make this team relevant.
4. Brandon Jacobs, RB, New York Giants
7 of 10
The Giants have a choice to make this offseason. Keep Brandon Jacobs and let Ahmad Bradshaw walk away via free agency or sign him and trade Brandon Jacobs. Bradshaw is going to want as big of a contract as Jacobs got a couple of years ago because well he is a better back than Jacobs.
Jacobs signed a four year deal worth $25 million and it just doesn't make sense for the Giants to pay both backs that much money. I think they should part ways with Jacobs and receive something solid in return before teams realize Jacobs has tanked.
Jacobs found the end zone this season more than Bradshaw, but it was Bradshaw that was far more valuable to the team. It's been long over due in my opinion, it's time for the Giants to trade Jacobs while he's healthy and still has worth.
3. Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Arizona Cardinals
8 of 10
Let's face it, the Cardinals aren't going to make Larry Fitzgerald happy and the likelihood of him staying in Arizona when he becomes a free agent is very slim.
If they can find him a strong quarterback to get him the ball and help the Cardinals win then perhaps things can work out. However, since Fitzgerald is pretty much their whole team, Arizona might be better off trading him and starting fresh.
The value for Fitzgerald is very high and some teams would break the bank to get a guy like him. Obviously the Cardinals would like to keep him around, but since it's a big possibility he won't return when his contract is up Arizona needs to get something for him. They cannot just let him walk away.
2. Carson Palmer, QB, Cincinnati Bengals
9 of 10
Carson Palmer apparently has $80 million dollars in the bank. He continues to make it clear that he wants out of Cincinnati. Will the Bengals just give this guy what he wants? Or will they take the risk and call his bluff?
The best option for the Bengals is to get rid of Palmer and start over. They do not want to let this guy retire because they will be in a worse position if that had traded him. Of course they're not going to be worth anything after they trade him but at least they can get something great in return for him. Palmer hasn't been the same since his knee injury, but he's still a very good quarterback. He's far better than a lot of options other teams have.
Trading Palmer is the way to go because he is worth a first round pick. The Bengals can get a lot in return to help them start over. If he does hold true to his word and retire Cincinnati is left with nothing and still has to start over.
1. Frank Gore, RB, San Francisco 49ers
10 of 10
Frank Gore hasn't played a full season in the NFL since 2006. His carries decline every year because of injuries. Gore is still a good option at running back, but the 49ers need to think about their future.
Gore is at risk for injury every season and San Francisco has to be tired of him constantly getting hurt. Trading him away for some draft picks would give this team much needed help to rebuild. Anthony Dixon had a decent rookie season, and given the chance to play more he could be special.
Gore had a good run in San Francisco but his days should be numbered if the 49ers were smart.
