Early Week 5 Thoughts On 'Upset Saturday'

With two top ten teams joining USC in the ranks of the upset this weekend, it's truly been 'Upset Saturday'. Alex Ferguson has his Week 5 thoughts....

HOLY REBEL! OLE MISS (Yes, that team that continually props up the SEC and hasn't won a SEC road game since Eli Manning was in score) upsets #5 Florida 31-30 AT THE SWAMP - thanks to a missed extra point by the Gators. I'm still shocked...

GOODBYE WISCONSIN! Next week was meant to be all about the meeting of two unbeaten team in Madtown, when Wisconsin and Ohio State face off in the Big Ten game of the season. Cancel that. The Badgers left a 19-0 lead - with multi-Olympic gold medallist Michael Phelps watching on - and lost 27-20 at Michigan. Maybe Rich Rodriguez isn't such a bad coach after all.

MARYLAND AGAIN? A couple of weeks after they upset Cal at home, Maryland did the same to an ACC rival, beating ACC rival and 20th ranked Clemson ON THE ROAD 20-17 in an exciting, if low-scoring game. The Jeff Bowden hate machine will start again....Weren't Clemson meant to be a dark horse for the BCS?

EAST CAROLINA - LOSE TWO STRAIGHT: Suddenly, things have fallen apart from Skip Holz's team. The boys who defeated West Virginia and Virginia Tech fell apart against Houston, losing 41-24 - at home. Yeowch.

DOWN GO WAKE! In a nightmare weekend for ranked ACC Championship teams, Wake fall 24-17 to Navy. The SIX turnovers killed Wake. The loss, however, probably didn't totally screw up Wake's ACC bid - they've only lost one game this season.....unlike Clemson.

IRISH EYES ARE SMILING The 38-21 thrashing of Purdue indicates that the only team these guys are going to lose to for the rest of this season are USC. That means, for better or worse, we'll see Notre Dame and their wonderful Irish fans in a big-time bowl game...with the usual result. This is not an above average team, but Jimmy Clausen's turning into a pretty good quarterback. And with the Irish's laughable 2009 schedule, he could look like a Heisman candidate next year.

DON'T TiVo - The Tennessee vs Auburn game. It might have ended Auburn 14, Tennessee 12, but it was a snorefest.
