Strikeforce: Diaz-Daley and Melendez-Kawajiri Are Confirmed for San Diego

Dale De SouzaMar 2, 2011

At least there's an event going down on April 9th for Strikeforce now, right, Coker?

Bleacher Report's own "Phantom Rider," Trent Reinsmith, confirmed earlier today that Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker confirmed the delay of the second half of the Strikeforce Heavyweight tournament, as well as the negotiations for not only a long-awaited bout between Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz and British slugger Paul Daley and the return of Gilbert "El Nino" Melendez against DREAM Lightweight star Tatsuya Kawajiri.

MMA Junkie confirmed earlier today that two title fights are set for the event, but the finished fight card will be set to take place at the San Diego Center, which houses 16,000 in attendance for major sporting events.

The fight should likely see a homecoming of sorts for both the Stockton-born welterweight king and the Santa Ana-born lightweight king, both of whom are standouts affiliated with Cesar Gracie's Jiu Jitsu Academy.

Kawajiri is a DREAM standout who has fought the likes of Josh Thomson and Shinya Aoki, among others in the past, and he'll be looking to become the first man not named Josh Thomson to end Melendez's hold on the 155-pound belt.

Daley, meanwhile, will be putting a 4-1 streak on the line against Diaz and his belt. Keep in mind that this streak of Daley includes his most recent win over Yuya Shirai at BAMMA 5, in which Paul Daley made it up to the fans who paid to see him fight for the BAMMA Welterweight title (for missing weight, again) by scoring a first-round KO over Shirai.

With what each of these men are known for in the sport and the many ways this could go, this is one Strikeforce card you won't want to miss.
