Strikeforce Results: Marloes Coenen Does Her Best Anderson Silva Impression

At Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson, Marloes Coenen defended her Strikeforce Women's Welterweight Championship for the first time.

With her contender, Liz Carmouche, fighting on short notice, it wasn't the title defense that was impressive, but the way in which Coenen defended her title. 

In the first round, Coenen showed why she had become a champion by picking apart her opponent on her feet.

However, the second and third rounds did not go nearly as well for Coenen. In those frames, Carmouche took Coenen down and transitioned to full mount.

From there, Coenen could not escape and was fortunate that the referee did not stop the fight. In the second round alone, Carmouche landed 87 strikes while the fight was on the ground.

Much like Carmouche was against Coenen, Chael Sonnen was a massive underdog in his fight against Anderson Silva.

Both contenders, Carmouche and Sonnen appeared to be on their way to completing huge upsets and becoming champions.

However, Anderson Silva ended up submitting Sonnen with less than two minutes left in a fight that he surely would have lost in a decision. While she didn't wait quite as long as Silva did, Coenen also completed a come-from-behind submission.

Silva's submission included an armbar, but both champions used a triangle to complete their epic comebacks.

If Coenen's reign as champion goes on half as long as Silva's has, she will surely be remembered as one of the pioneers of women's MMA. If she is remembered as such, then this submission win will likely go down as one of her greatest wins.
