UFC 127 Results: A Draw with Jon Fitch Keeps BJ Penn's Legacy Intact

Mike HodgesFeb 26, 2011

UFC 127 main event saw two welterweight contenders BJ Penn and Jon Fitch square off in a hard-fought battle, however both competitors fought to an unexpected majority draw.

In his bout with Fitch, Penn came out and immediately established a clinch and looked to impose his will.

Penn took down his opponent, establishing a dominant position by taking his back and attempting to submit him. However Fitch escaped and ended up in Penn's guard for the remainder of the round.

The second round appeared to be much of the same.

In the third round, Fitch dominated the smaller Penn, as he took him down and got in a dominant position, controlling his opponent, and punishing him with hard, effective shots for the entire round.

While this decision will likely bring up debate for more efficient judging in MMA, it certainly did nothing for either fighter, especially for Penn.

The decision for the Hawaiian didn't hurt his legacy but it didn't do anything to heighten it either.

Penn entered this bout with confidence and determination to finish his opponent, even implementing some wrestling to mix up his offense, as he took down his opponent a couple of times.

But at the end of the fight, Penn appeared to look tired and defeated.

He might of raised a few eyebrows adding some wrestling into his arsenal but as the fight wore on, Penn wore out and became less composed.

Whether you look at this decision as a win or a loss for Penn, his legacy will not be looked at any differently.

At least for Penn, he will live to fight another day. And considering his current status, he might want that day to be sooner rather than later.
