Oakland Raiders: Keys to Sunday's Game

Raider Card AddictSep 26, 2008

Ok folks, we're within 2 days of the division rivalry game. A good point to take a look, at what will be the keys to this matchup, points, and what may be the difference between victory, and defeat. Roll the film, mike.

"Sounds of crackling far off"

Our first issue, is with LT, Tomlinson the Tank, whatever nickname we want to give him.

Pure and simple, he plays against us, usually he'll get 100 yards. However, we've already shown that we can slow down other teams as far as the running game goes. A point to the Kansas City game is in order. Sure, some people will say, Larry Johnson was not at full strength. But as well, while LJ ran for 22 yards against us, he ran for 99 more yards against the Falcons.

So, stopping the run, will be the first key. But as well, it's not who we stop....but that we stop the run, no matter who gets the ball. LT, Sproles, even Philip Rivers on a scramble. Get in there, hit the guy, and drop him. Don't let him bounce around like a ping pong ball.

Second Key, for us, is going to be getting solid work from our Corners. This won't be easy, as we're getting dinged up every week. Add into the mix that DeAngelo Hall isn't earning his paycheck, aside from one good pick, I'd say we need a lot of improvement. Covering Antonio Gates is important, but a blanket of coverage, as well on players like Chris Chambers, Vincent Jackson, or a inside pass to LT....we need to limit Rivers' ability....or, take him out of his comfort zone, period.

Third, is our own running game. Darren McFadden is listed as questionable, due to the lingering effects of the turf toe. This probably means Michael Bush will need a larger slice of carries, but as well, a faster learning curve for our WR corps. We did get to see some good plays from JaMarcus Russell, like the bullet pass he threw to Higgins, through the needle's eye late in the game against the Bills. We also know, that it is a work in progress.

The last Key, is injuries. We know both sides are working with several players either returning, or are suffering through them. It may come down to the last man standing effort. I know the Raiders had several players missing from practice on Wed, so hopefully in 4 days, more will be ready to play. Cross your fingers on that one.

I still like the Raiders chances, if anything, because their defense is actually better than San Diego's. Also, the Raiders have given up about 9 points less per game.

Add in the fact that Merriman is now on the IR....it's about even.

RCAinSD, Signing off.
