WWE Wrestlemania 27 Results: Was It the Greatest Show of the Year?

Jon SainzApr 4, 2011

Today we have the Hall of Fame induction ceremony before RAW and the premiere of the new Tough Enough after it. But before that let's look at the event that took place last night, the 27th edition of WrestleMania.

As far as the PPVs we've had so far, we started the year with a forgettable Royal Rumble, then continued it with an awesome Elimination Chamber PPV to get us on the Road to WrestleMania, which ended last night. Here's my match-by-match analysis:

The Rock Promo

TOP NEWS

WRESTLING: OCT 02 AEW Dynamite/Rampage Pittsburgh
Monday Night RAW

After the singing of America the Beautiful and an intro, The Rock takes a long time to enter the ring and is given a mic; the music stops, but the cheers go on. "Finally, The Rock has come back to Atlanta and finally The Rock has come back to WrestleMania," he says.

He promises "the most memorable WM of all time," a "Cena Sucks" chant breaks out, he gets a little interaction, The Rock says, "Wrestle," the people say, "Mania," he lets us now he's excited, mocks Cena, another chant breaks out, this time it's "Fruity Pebble."

New interaction; Rock: "Yabba"; people: "Dabba." He continues to hype up the people (and himself). The promo ends with the Rock and the people saying "the most electrifying catchphrase in sports entertainment: If you smellllllllllllllllllllllllll what The Rock is cookin'. " His music hits and The Rock leaves the stage.

Before the first match, a WM video promo is shown, featuring past WrestleManias and bits and pieces of the buildup to tonight's matches.

WHC Match

We start this year's WM with a World Heavyweight Championship match, Alberto del Rio vs Edge. Del Rio enters first, presented as the Royal Rumble winner and with Brodus Clay in his corner. Christian's music hits after that, since he's going to be allowed to be in Edge's corner. Edge himself enters next.

Staredown and double headlock to start the match. Each slaps the other and we start the match with Edge on the offensive. A little of back and forth, with ADR focusing on Edge's arm. Del Rio pins Edge a couple of times, but the rated R superstar kicks out.

Alberto goes for a flying kick, Edge dodges and ADR goes flying out of the ring, Edge takes some time to recuperate and flies over the top rope to land on Del Rio. Eight count before both are in the ring again, Edge goes to the top turnbuckle, ADR sends him flying and goes for a quick cover, but Edge kicks out at two. Edge goes on the attack, getting his first pin after a big boot and a clothesline, but ADR kicks out after a two count. ADR goes for the armbar, Edge counters it and gets another near fall.

Del Rio gets the armbar in, but Edge is able to get his feet to the ropes. Edge goes to the top turnbuckle again, and again is thrown down, this time by a kick. ADR goes for the cover, Edge gets his foot to the rope and we have our first outside interference as Ricardo Rodriguez gets Edge's foot out of the ropes, but Edge is able to kick out.

Christian goes after Rodriguez, Brodus Clay tries to defend him only to be attacked by Captain Charisma. Who is knocked down by ADR, who kicks him from inside the ring. Clay bodyslams CC, while Del Rio watches, Edge uses this opportunity to try a school boy, but ADR is able to kick out of it.

DDT by Edge which leaves ADR down, Edge goes for the spear, Del Rio avoids him and while Rodriguez is distracting the referee, Brodus Clay attacks Edge's arm. ADR goes for the armbar once again.

He locks it in, but Edge is able to counter it by kind of standing up on top of Del Rio who has his shoulders down and has to let go before he gets pinned. Edge then locks in a submission hold of his own. On the outside Christian DDTs Brodus Clay from the ring to the outside wall. Del Rio is able to get free, but Edge spears him almost immediately and pins him.

Winner and still WHC: Edge.

Before he leaves, Edge and Christian have some fun by attacking ADR's car.

Good match, but why is it the opener?

We get a Tough Enough promo before the next match

Cody Rhodes vs. Rey Mysterio

Rhodes enters first with new music and a new entrance video. While he enters we get some background on the match. Mysterio comes out in a superhero outfit that resembles Captain America.

The match starts out with Cody still wearing his hooded jacket. Mysterio attacks a bit, Cody counters an attack and uses that time to get rid of the jacket, he goes for Mysterio's leg and exposes a knee brace for a second. Cody continues on the attack, even getting a couple of two counts. Mysterio tries to attack every now and then, but Rhodes is in complete control.

Mysterio is able to throw Cody out of the ring and starts creating some momentum. After getting back in the ring and a weird attack, counters Mysterio and gets his first near fall of the match. Mysterio controls the match for a bit, but he almost gets pinned after a counter by Cody.

A hurricanrana and a dropkick to the knee, Rhodes is set for a 619 but he's able to stop Mysterio by catching his legs. Cody gets on the attack again, getting another near fall.

He starts attacking Mysterio's knee, getting rid of Rey's knee brace. After that Mysterio gets a two count off a moonsault. He relieves Cody of his mask gets him set or the 619 with a hurricanrana, hits the 619. Goes for a West Coast Pop, but Cody stops him with his knees and sends him to the ropes.

Mysterio comes off the ropes and kicks Cody's face, but is unable to get more than a two count. Mysterio puts on Cody's facemask and starts attacking him with it. Another West Coast Pop, this time with the mask on, but again only a near fall.

Mystero gets rid of the facemask, and tries to attack Cody flying through the ropes, but Cody is waiting for him there with the knee brace. Cross Rhodes and the match is over.

Winner: Cody Rhodes

Again a good match, but could've been a better fit in another PPV.

Promo Time

Snoop Dog is here with Teddy Long. And they're doing a talent search.

First up is William Regal, who apparently isn't gangster enough for Snoop, next the Great Khali doing the song from Grease, Zack Ryder's next, but is attacked with a coconut, courtesy of "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, Yoshi Tatsu and Chris Masters are next, they do Queen's We Will Rock You, Masters with his pectoral muscles and Tatsu just singing, last is Hornswoggle.

Kind of funny, but a waste of time.

Eight-Man Tag Team Match

The Corre enters first all at the same time. Big Show and Kane come together, followed by Marella and Kofi Kingston, who is substituting Kozlov.

Marella and Slater start things out in the ring. After a short time, Santino tags Big Show in, when Big Show had Slater cornered, Big Zeke intervened, clotheslining Show, only to be attacked by Kane, who was set to be attacked by Gabriel, but knocks him out, Barret takes out Kane just after that, only to be hit by Kingston's trouble in paradise. Kingston goes on attacking Gabriel and Jackson. Santino's in the ring and hits the cobra on Slater who is subsequently knocked out by the Big Show, who pins him.

Winners: Kane, The Big Show, Santino Marella and Kofi Kingston.

Five minutes (I'm feeling generous) and only three guys actually competing, why in the world was this match booked?

Promo Time

The Rock is chatting with Eve. Mae Young makes an appearance and is gently mocked by The Rock about her age. Mae and Eve leave and The Rock is left complaining that someone else could have been coming around the corner instead of Mae Young. Enter Stone Cold Steve Austin. They chat for a bit without keeping their eyes off each other.

Thanks to some band for the theme song to WM 27.

Randy Orton vs. CM Punk is next but first a video of the events that led to this match.

Randy Orton vs. CM Punk

Punk enters first followed by Orton. Orton starts on the attack. Punk is able to attack Orton's injured knee and goes for a cover early, but only gets a two count, still he remains in control. A bit of back and forth with Punk focusing on Orton's knee, which allows him to go for another cover, and another two count. Punk continues his attack on Orton but is only able to get a two count once again.

He signals for the GTS, gets Orton in position, but Randy hits him with elbows and is able to escape, tries to counter it with an RKO but is knocked down by a kick. Punk ogoes for the cover once again and, you guessed it, it's only a two count. Punk goes to the top turnbuckle, but Orton is able to get to one of Punk's feet and get him off balance. Orton goes up to and superplexes Punk, and covers him for yet another two count.

Punk continues his assault on Orton's knee. As they are in the ring in something like, but not quite, a figure four, each one gets a two count as their shoulders were toughing the mat. Orton manages to escape and starts pounding on Punk. And yet another near fall for Orton. Punk starts kicking Orton and gets him to the floor to lock in an Anaconda Vise. Orton rolls with Punk to the ropes which forces Punk to release the hold.

Punk goes on the attack, Orton is able to counter and sets Punk for a DDT through the ropes, which hits and Randy gets ready for a RKO rethinks it and gets ready for a punt, but his knee gives out when he tries to execute it. Orton tries a RKO, but Punk is able to escape it. Punk goes to the ropes and goes flying, but is caught with a RKO in mid air and pinned.

Winner: Randy Orton.

Great match, but way too many near falls for my taste.

Promo Time

The Rock, once again, this time with Gene Auckerland. John Cena's number one fan is with them and it happens to be Pee Wee Hermann.

Again kind of funny, but completely unnecessary.

Commercial for a new WWE DVD called "The True Story of WrestleMania."

And Howard Fikel is in the ring to welcome the HoF class of 2011, which consists of Abdullah The Butcher, Sunny, The Road Warriors, Drew Carey, "Bullet" Bob Armstrong, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan and HBK Shawn Michaels.

Jim Duggan and Shawn Michaels get the biggest welcome, while Drew Carey is booed.

Michael Cole vs. Jerry "the King" Lawler

Booker T and Good ol' JR, Jim Ross are brought in to do commentary alongside Josh Matthews. Cole interrupts JR's entrance to run his mouth. Mocks JR and Lawler and irritates people. Swagger comes out next, but is interrupted by glass shattering and almost run over by Stone Cold's quad, as is Cole who gets in his "Cole Mine."

Lawler enters last wearing a new cape. A "Jerry, Jerry" chant breaks out with Cole still in his mine, stretching. Stone Cold tells him to enter the ring, Cole refuses, Austin calls for the bell and Lawler goes for Cole, Swagger gets his ass handed over as he tries to stop "the King".

Lawler gets to the mine, Cole starts to apologize and offers a hand through a hole in the mine. Lawler shakes his hand, but doesn't let go and uses it to hit Cole's head against the front of the mine. Lawler enters the mine and starts beating on Cole.

Lawler gets Cole out of the mine, but before going into the ring, he sends him crushing against the RAW GM. Cole is thrown in the ring, and while Lawler is going into it, Swagger attacks him.  Cole slides into Lawler, and distracts Austin while Swagger attacks Lawler again, this time with an ankle lock.

Jerry gets in the ring and Cole attacks his ankle continuously. After a while of doing this, Cole goes for a cover but only gets a two count. Cole continues the attack on Jerry's legs. Cole gets an ankle lock but Lawler is able to counter it. Lawler pounds on Cole, Swagger throws the towel in and asks for the bell. Austin takes it, wipes his sweat and throws it back to Swagger, who enters the ring only to be stunned by Austin a moment later.

Cole gets up and starts discussing with the referee and pushes him, too bad the referee is Stone Cold who pushes him back to be hit by Lawler, who hits him continuously. Jerry covers Cole after a dropkick and an elbow of the top rope, but gets Cole's shoulders up before the three count. Lawler gets an ankle lock, to which Cole immediately taps out, Austin asks him repeatedly if he wants to give up to which Cole answers yes every single time, after a while Stone Cold calls for the bell.

Winner: Jerry "the King" Lawler

Swagger picks up a beat up Cole and leaves with him in his arms. Stone Cold calls for beer for himself and Lawler, Booker T joins them in the ring and does a spin a rooney. Stone Cold gives him a beer and a stunner after it.

The RAW GM sends an email and Josh Matthews is to read it. The email says that Austin has overstepped his authority, disqualifies Lawler and reverses the decision. A "Bullshit" chant breaks out as the news are announced. Lawler gets Matthews in the ring, where Austin stuns him. Austin gets even more beer and leaves.

I agree with the chant and refuse to credit Cole as the winner.

The match was OK to be between a non wrestler and a former wrestler, also who didn't want to see Cole's ass kicked?

Promo Time

A video of WM axxess and other events that took place in Atlanta revolving around WrestleMania. Troops in attendance are shown. Promo video for the next match, HHH vs The Undertaker. Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler are the only announcers

HHH vs The Undertaker (No Holds Barred)

We have our first (kind of) big entrance of the night; the music's good, the lights are great, warriors with shields are protecting the King of Kings, who is in center stage with his crown and his cape. All goes black, HHH's music hits and he makes his usual entrance.

The gong sounds and all goes black, lightning and fire appear as the gong continues to sound. The ramp is filled with smoke when Johnny Cash's music starts. The Undertaker appears alone and with his hat and coat. Nothing spectacular.

HHH starts on the attack, until he's thrown out of the ring. The match continues on the outside of the ring. The Game continues on the attack until he's thrown against the ring steps. Taker starts to take things off the Spanish announce table, but before he tries anything, HHH throws himself and Taker against the Cole Mine, destroying it.

HHH goes back to the ring first, followed shortly thereafter by Taker, who starts on the offensive. Undertaker goes for an old school, but HHH throws him down from the turnbuckle (too bad, I wanted to see it again after so long).

Now it's HHH who is getting thing in the table out of the way, this time it's the English announcer's table. With both men on top of the table, HHH goes for a pedigree, but it's countered into a chokeslam, which is again countered into a pedigree, which is again countered and send HHH flying and leaves him in the floor outside the ring.

Taker ignores him completely and gets in the ring, and as HHH is getting up The Undertaker goes flying above the top rope into him. A "holy shit" chant breaks out.

The match continues outside the ring, Taker is trying to set up a tombstone piledriver in the lower half of the ring steps, but it's countered and HHH creates some distance, Taker goes flying against him, but it's reversed to a spinebuster on the Spanish announce table, which of course gets destroyed.

They get back in the ring and The Undertaker get the first near fall after a chokeslam. HHH gets Taker in the corner and starts pounding on him, Taker gets under HHH for a Last Ride, the Game is able to escape and set things up for a pedigree, but it's countered, Taker uses the ropes to gain momentum, but is faced with a spinebuster and a near fall for HHH.

HHH gets out of the ring and grabs a chair, but as he was going for it Taker hits him with a big boot and takes the chair and is able to hit HHH once with it. As he's going for the second chair shot, HHH counters and sets up a pedigree, which he is able to complete this time, but only allows him to a near fall.

HHH gets Taker to a corner to try for a superplex, but is countered with a last ride that also ends up in a near fall. The Undertaker signals for the tombstone and hits it, but again just for a two count. Taker can't believe it, sees the chair HHH brought in earlier and sets it up in the middle of the ring, goes for another tombstone, but is countered and is DDTed on the chair.

As both get into their feet again, HHH hits a pedigree, but yet again only to a two count. The Game tries it again with the third pedigree of the match, only to be met by a near fall once again. As they both crawl to the ropes, HHH gets the chair and delivers multiple chair shots to The Undertaker. As both are on their feet, HHH delivers a chair shot to the head of The Undertaker.

Taker struggles to stand up, and when he does, HHH tombstones him, but is met with a two count again. A "this is awesome" chant starts. HHH goes outside the ring and gets his sledgehammer from under the ring. As he goes to hit Taker with the hammer, he finds himself in Hell's Gates, from which he is unable to escape.

Winner: The Undertaker (19-0)

With both men on the floor and Cash's music playing, a bit 19 and a big 0 appear on the screen and the pyro goes off.

And while HHH can go off walking by himself, Taker has to be brought out in a stretcher. A fitting "do not try this at home" video is shown

This match was great. Slow at times, if you want to say something negative.

We are informed that WM 28 is going to take place in Miami on April 1st, 2012.

Six-Person Mixed Tag Team Match

"Excuse me!" Yes, Vickie's here, she introduces LayCool and Ziggler, who comes out first and walks to the ring with her. Morrison comes out next, followed by Trish Stratus and lastly Snooki. Before the match even starts, LayCool attack Snooki and Trish. Ziggler separates them and is slapped by Snooki.

Trish and McCool start things out. Back and forth, nothing special happens until Layla interferes, just to be hit and send back by Trish and then by McCool, Stratus goes for a cover but only gets a two count, and another after Dolph interferes, he's sent out out of the ring by Morrison, who hits starship pain to the outside of the ring and lands in Ziggler. In the ring Trish tags Snooki in, who hits McCool with her whole body twice before getting the pin.

Winners: John Morrison, Trish Stratus and Snooki

I've got nothing against celebrities, but were all others unavailable? Also why is this here and not in the early matches?

Extreme Rules will be on May first. Georgia Dome attendance record: 71617 is also announced before the Main Event. Promo video to hype up the WWE Championship match.

WWE Championship Match

Miz enters first with Riley, Cena has a choir singing before he makes his usual entrance. Circling, stare down and a double headlock to start the match. Pretty boring start until Miz takes a bit of an advantage and goes for a cover just for a two count. Cena counters an attack and gets a near fall himself, just before Miz gets another one.

Cena leg drops from the top turnbuckle onto another near fall, again followed by one by The Miz, who continues kicking Cena and gets yet another near fall. Miz doesn't stop attacking and getting two counts, at one point Cena gets a bit of offense, but is unable to connect with the FU (or AA or any name it has now), Miz reverses it to a DDT and gets one more near fall.Cena goes for the STFU (or STF or whatever), Miz once again reverses it and, you guessed it, another near fall.

Riley distracts the referee for a bit and Miz exposes a turnbuckle. While the referee is trying to put the turnbuckle back, Cena goes for a small package, but the referee fails to notice it at first and only gets a two count. Cena goes on the attack and is able to lock the STFU in. Miz is able to crawl to the ropes and the referee separates them. Riley interferes and hit Cena face first into the exposed turnbuckle, skull crushing finale and yet again a two count.

Miz goes for the skull crushing finale once again, but Cena shakes him off, knocking the referee out in the process. Cena connects with an FU and goes for the cover, but there's no official. Riley gets in the ring and hits Cena in the head with a briefcase, still not enough for a three count. Riley distracts the referee and Miz gets the briefcase. Cena is able to avoid him, but sadly Riley is not. Cena gets another FU in but Miz is able to kick out at two.

Miz goes out of the ring and so does Cena, who clotheslines Miz over the protective barrier. Cena enters the ring for a moment in order to break the ten count and spears Miz over the protective barrier into the concrete where the public is sitting. They stay there as the referee gets a ten count, counting both guys out.

The Rock's music starts and the man himself appears. As he gets in the ring, the RAW GM sends an email and The Rock himself goes to read it. Starts reading it, tells us that it doesn't matter what he thinks, throws the computer away grabs a mic and enters the ring again and restarts the match as a no-DQ, no-count-out, no-time-limit affair.

The match restarts when both Cena and Miz are in the ring. Cena goes for an FU, Miz escapes, Rock hits a rock bottom on Cena and Miz pins him, winning the match.

The Rock enters the ring again after the match and attacks Miz, ending it with a people's elbow. And WM 27 ends with The Rock's music and him posing in a corner.

Winner and Still WWE Champion: The Miz

OK match at best, awful finish as most of Miz's title defenses.

Random Thoughts

Why did the show start with a Main Event match?

Why have a RAW recall in the middle of it?

I think someone forgot to tell Austin that the WWE is now PG. They also forgot to tell The Rock about it.

What ever happened to big entrances?

Why was Lawler wearing Stone Cold's T-shirt after the match with Cole?

How come the Spanish announce table always gets destroyed?

Did everybody forget that HHH vs. The Undertaker at Wrestlemania has already happened?

Who the hell decided this order for the matches?

What's with the red? Santino and Cena were both wearing it.

Can Cole look even more ridiculous than he did in his orange outfit?

What was Riley wearing? Something he stole from Alladin?

Why do I have a dejà vu feeling with half the matches?

Cole's still an idiot.
