UFC 127 Results: Where Do B.J. Penn and Jon Fitch Go from Here?

Sal DeRoseFeb 26, 2011

It went three rounds, two rounds that were a toss up and one that was completely lopsided in Jon Fitch's favor.

Fitch said he wanted to beat the legend, B.J. Penn, but came up just short at UFC 127 earning a majority draw.

According to fightmetric.com, Jon Fitch landed 231 strikes to B.J. Penn's 48—just to show how Fitch was in this fight.

With this draw, it puts the two fighters at a crossroad. The fight was supposed to determine the No. 1 contender for the welterweight title. Now, if Georges St-Pierre beats Jake Shields at UFC 130, it seems the fight with Anderson Silva is just even more likely.

These two fighters could get one more shot at each other. If GSP leaves the welterweight division, it seems that could be more likely to help decide who will hold the welterweight title in the case GSP vacates it.

If Fitch and Penn were to fight again, it would end in a Fitch victory after seeing how he controlled Penn in the third round with his grinding-out style of fighting.

In the case of Penn, it is possible that he will make a move back to the lightweight division as the bigger Fitch was able to finally exploit him in the third. If the fight had gone a full five-round championship match, Fitch would have easily finished off Penn before the final bell or worked him on the ground.

In any case, Fitch should get a title shot against GSP (he does deserve a second chance) or against Shields, depending on who wins the title.

For Penn, he should go on to fight Thiago Alves (who, like Fitch, would be bigger than Penn) or Paulo Thiago.

Penn got started a little too high up on the welterweight chain and it led to a pretty boring fight when Fitch took over.

Admittedly, Fitch is pretty boring to watch. His style of fighting combined with Penn led to a pretty lackluster fight at times, and especially the last round.

For Fitch, either a title shot or a rematch against Penn. For Penn, either Alves, Thiago or a rematch with Fitch should be in the cards.
