Kansas City Chiefs: 10 Free Agents the Team Could Target
With the NFL free agency period around the corner, many teams are scrambling to fill their current holes on their roster.
The Kansas City Chiefs have been more active in free agency in the last two seasons, including netting QB Matt Cassel and LB Mike Vrabel via trade in the in the '09 offseason.
Let's take a look at a few guys that the Chiefs could go after this year.
RB Mike Tolbert
1 of 10
The Carrolton, Georgia native has played three seasons in the NFL and had a very productive 2010 campaign.
Last year, he rushed for 735 yards and 11 touchdowns as he picked up the slack left by rookie Ryan Mathews.
Tolbert could also be a solid compliment to Jamaal Charles, and is also a very good blocker out of the backfield.
WR Steve Smith
2 of 10
Although he had a down year in 2010, Smith still is a big play threat every time he gets the balls in his hands.
In 2009, he had over 100 catches and over 1,200 receiving yards for the Giants.
Acquiring Smith would help free up Pro Bowl wideout Dwayne Bowe and would give Matt Cassel another solid option on offense.
RB Michael Bush
3 of 10
The 245 pound Bush is a load when he gets the ball out of the backfield and would be an upgrade to about every team's running game.
He has been an excellent second option to Raiders' star Darren McFadden and has average around 550 yards and five rushing touchdowns in each of the last three seasons.
As long as Bush can learn from his recent DUI arrest, he could be a good signing for the Chiefs for next season.
WR Steve Breaston
4 of 10
The former Michigan star has had three solid seasons in Arizona and he might no be a Cardinal next season.
Breaston to the Chiefs has been a rumor since the end of the '10 regular season and he would give KC a burner that can stretch the field for their offense.
Also, Todd Haley has a past connection with him as he used to be the offensive coordinator for Arizona from 2007-08.
RT Tyson Clabo
5 of 10
Adding Clabo would make sense considering the inconsistent play of right tackle Barry Richardson last season.
The six-year veteran made the Pro Bowl squad in 2010 and is a beast at 6'6, 331 lbs.
He could help solidify an offensive line that already has five-time Pro Bowler Brian Waters and a young stud in LT Branden Albert.
CB Nnamdi Asomugha
6 of 10
Asomugha is one of the best corners in the league and it was a big surprise to everyone when the Raiders decided not to re-sign him after their season ended in January.
Don't be fooled by his career-low 19 tackles last season, as many teams don't even throw to his area when he is on the field.
He would be an immediate starter in the Chiefs' secondary and paired with emerging stars Brandon Flowers and Eric Berry, he would easily give KC the best unit in the league.
WR Sidney Rice
7 of 10
Rice has been a weapon for Vikings veteran QB Brett Favre over the past two seasons and he would be a huge upgrade for the Chiefs receiving corps.
He had over 1,300 yards receiving and 8 touchdowns in 2009, as he became a household name under the tutelage of Favre.
Although an injury limited him to just 6 games in 2010, don't be surprised if Chiefs GM Scott Pioli takes a chance on this guy.
DE Charles Johnson
8 of 10
The University of Georgia product is a hot name on the 2011 free agent class after having a career season in '10.
Johnson compiled 11.5 sacks and had 62 tackles to help anchor Carolina's defensive line.
Partnered with the resurgent Glenn Dorsey, he could bolster a young and rapidly improving Chiefs defensive line next season.
CB Champ Bailey
9 of 10
The 10-time Pro Bowler didn't show his age last season as he was a force in the Broncos secondary once again.
Not only is he excellent in coverage, but he has a nose for the ball, picking off 48 passes in his magnificent 12-year career.
Bailey would also bring some swagger to a Chiefs defense that could need it heading into the '11 season.
QB Matt Moore
10 of 10
The former Panthers starting QB could be a solid backup to Kansas City's starter Matt Cassel next year.
In 2009, he threw 8 touchdown passes and had a stellar 98.5 quarterback rating in 7 games played on the year.
With the recent flop of current backup Brodie Croyle last season against San Diego, Moore could become a more attractive option for the Chiefs going forward.
