Toronto Raptors: Should the Team Change Its Colors to Blue and White?

Patrick YaghoobiansFeb 19, 2011

The topic of changing the Toronto Raptors' team and jersey colors is something that has intrigued many of the people in Toronto many times.

This is something that has already happened in the Toronto Raptors' past. The team used to have black, purple and white as their main colors on their jerseys when the franchise had just begun.

At first, the Raptors had a white home team jersey with Raptors written on the front, the logo of the team on one side, and the player’s number on the other side. On the back side were, of course, the player’s name and number.

The player’s names were sewn onto a very nice backdrop on the jersey. This jersey, of course, would become purple when the Raptors traveled on the road. Another fact about the original jersey is that there were stripes going vertically on the front and back of the jersey.

A couple of years later, the franchise decided to rid of the stripes and changed the jersey entirely. The main colors stayed the same, but the design was much different. This time, they made the jersey much simpler.

Home jerseys would be white colored on both the front and the back with purple and black on the sides. The front simply said “RAPTORS” and had the player’s number directly under it. On the back, there would be the player’s name and number.

Things took a major change after the year Chris Bosh was drafted. The team decided to change its colors entirely and decided to add an alternate logo. The black, purple and white were changed to red and white, with the occasional black jerseys being worn on some occasions.

The team kept the design used on both the front and back of the jersey, but changed the design on the side of the jersey a bit. They also added a new alternate logo that is now used on halfcourt during the home games.

So now that we have learned our little history lesson of the day, we come to the reason as to why the team should change their colors.

When you look at the entire city of Toronto’s sports teams, you see a trend in the colours that are used. The Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL) are known for wearing the famous blue and white, same with the Argonauts (CFL) and the Blue Jays (MLB).

So if the Toronto Raptors are the only team that are not colored blue and white (the Toronto Rock [lacrosse] do not really count although lacrosse is a sport), why should they not change their colors. It is sort of a tradition in Toronto sports to wear the blue and white, and it should be embraced by the Raptors.

The logo and the jersey can stay the same, as they both look very nice, but changing the colors to match the rest of the city would be a nice change.

The team does currently wear blue and white when they wear the “Huskies” jerseys, but them wearing that jersey is a very rare occasion.
