Random Musings of an Oregon Duck Fan

Brett FieldSep 24, 2008

Here are a few random musings I felt neede to be shared with the Bleacher Report community this week.

1)  I know its been a tough year for us Pac-10 fans, but we can take solace in the fact that despite our conferences well documented struggles this season, we are still 3-1 against the Big 10.  Word out of L.A. is that our beloved commissioner Tom Hansen has adopted "Well, at least we can still beat the Big 10" as the new conference slogan, replacing the old favorite "National T.V. exposure?  We don't need no stinking National T.V. exposure!"

2) Oregon should add a new twist to its halftime contest, in which a fan is selected to throw footballs at cardboard receivers, by letting the lucky fan compete against Chris Harper.  This would give Harper a chance to work on his throwing without taking valuable practice snaps from the other three quarterbacks, and give the fans a chance to boo Harper without him actually getting on the field.

3) Has anyone noticed Oregon's QB curse seems to have started when the Ducks ran their first promotion of Dennis Doxon's Heisman campaign?  Dixon collapsed to the Arizona turf literally minutes after the first commercial aired.

I suggest that to counterbalance this effect the Ducks run an ad in their next nationally televise game consisting a clip of Lisa from Medford beating Chris Harper in the halftime contest, followed by a plea to Heisman voters; "Don't vote Chris Harper for Heisman.  Ever."

4) I'm tired of hearing the little brothers in Corvallis call themselves "Beaver Nation." You can't call yourself Beaver Nation unless 1) You win an Olympic Medal  2) Mike Riley gets a seat in the U.N. or 3) You sell out your stadium for a game against the No. 1 team in the nation.  Oregon drew 59,000 to Utah State, and OSU can't even get 45,000 for USC?  Something is seriously wrong.

5) Is it just me or is UCLA getting desperate?  After cutting ticket prices a mere $10 for the rest of the season, UCLA ran an ad in the Fresno Bee in an attempt to draw Bulldog fans to Saturday's game in the Rose Bowl.  The Beavers aren't even that desperate.

6) Why is it that the AP poll is the only poll the media pays attention to?  Along with the fact that AP voters have roughly the same level of intelligence as SEC fans, THE POLL ISN'T EVEN PART OF THE BCS!  WHICH MAKES THE AP POLL IRRELEVANT!

So I don't want to hear about USC not having another top-25 team on their schedule.  They face No. 22 Oregon in two weeks in what Joe Giansante assures me is the biggest game in the history of USC football.

7) I used to have a lot of respect for the Boise State football program, but not anymore.  Bronco coach Chris Peterson announced today that neither Ellis Powers, who knocked Oregon QB Jerremiah Masoli out of the game with a  blatantly late hit, nor Jeron Johnson, who was ejected for hitting Oregon TE Ed Dickson after a pass had sailed over his head, would face any further disciplinary measures.

When questioned about the lack of discipline, Peterson responded by comparing those two hits with a penalty called on an Oregon player for jumping on a pile after a fumble.  Comparing a player jumping on a fumble scrum with to a hit that probably should have broken Masoli's neck is absolutely classless.  I hope Chris Peterson goes to Washington after this year so I can have yet another excuse to hate the Huskies.
