NFL Network's Michael Lombardi: Steve Smith To New England Patriots Possible
Spectulating on the state of the Carolina Panthers and the New England Patriots, the NFL Network's Michael Lombardi suggested the possibility of a trade between the two franchises. Clearly, this does nothing to guarantee a deal actually coming to fruition, but the logic behind the deal that Lombardi outlined is solid.
Lombardi argued that the rebuilding Panthers organization may look to acquire draft picks in their restocking effort after an abysmal 2-14 season. The 2010 campaign resulted in the axing of long-time head coach John Fox and earned the first selection of this year's draft and, while that pick is nice, they already dealt their second-rounder. What turned out to be the 33rd overall pick this year was shipped out last offseason, so that the team could move up to select wide receiver Armanti Edwards.
Carolina dealt that pick to the Patriots, who were content to turn their 2009 third-round pick into a 2010 second-round pick. Lombardi suggested that either the 33rd pick or, possibly, one of New England's other early picks, could head in Carolina's direction this time, as the Panthers may be looking to cash in on wide receiver Steve Smith.
Smith, who reportedly asked Panthers Owner Jerry Richardson for a trade during the 2010 season, will be 32 in 2011. However, his production as a wide receiver has yet to hit the dreaded mid-thirties wall that so many other veterans fall victim to every season.
Lombardi, recognizing the Patriots need for another wide receiver who could serve as a downfield threat, believes that the four-time Pro-Bowler is a perfect fit.
The Patriots must recognize that the opportunity to acquire an explosive and physical receiver with game changing speed doesn't come everyday.
