New York Islanders Breaking News: P.A. Parenteau Signed To One-Year Extension

Daniel FriedmanFeb 17, 2011

The New York Islanders have signed forward P.A. Parenteau to a one-year contract extension said to be worth $1.25 million.

Parenteau has 14 goals and 21 assists this season for New York, which places him third on the team in points with 35.

He is the latest player to utilize the opportunity the Islanders gave him this year, joining the likes of Matt Moulson and Michael Grabner.

Parenteau, originally the Anaheim Ducks ninth round draft pick, has shown he is an NHL-caliber player, an opportunity he had never gotten prior to this season.

His biggest taste of the NHL thus far came during a brief stint with the New York Rangers early last season, before being returned to their AHL affiliate in Hartford.

He has been playing on a line with John Tavares and Matt Moulson for most of the season, and the trio have arguably been New York's best this year.

"Playing with guys like [Tavares] and Moulson, it's definitely going to help your case," Parenteau said. " I think we've been having success. We have some good chemistry, a good thing going and I think that was part of the extension."

There were rumors circulating that the Islanders were shopping Parenteau, but that scenario no longer seems probable.

This is a smart signing by the Islanders, as they will be able to hold on to a player who has been effective for them all season long, and proved to be a very solid pick up by General Manager Garth Snow.
