NFL Rumors: Possible New England Patriots Trade For Steve Smith

Rumors have been swirling around the NFL world of a possible New England Patriots trade for Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith. 

Due to the uncertainty of the CBA and that it's set to expire in March, no free agents will be signed until there's a new agreement. However, come draft day, trades will go down as usual.

The New England Patriots have two picks in each of the first three rounds and could use those picks as potential trading chips. 

It's been no secret that Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith is on the trading block, and New England could be a potential home for the four-time Pro Bowler. 

New England has a nice group of receivers with Deion Branch and Wes Welker; however, they're lacking the playmaking receiver, and Smith could fill that hole.

The Patriots are in a "win now" mindset with the time on quarterback Tom Brady is ticking, and drafting a rookie receiver wouldn't be the best bet. 

If New England drafts a receiver, it will take some time for that player to not only adjust to the NFL, but to adjust to New England's complicated offense.

However, New England could use some of their draft picks as trading chips and make a deal for Smith. 

Smith would fit nicely in New England's offense and would add veteran leadership and the desire to win.

Last season, for the lowly Panthers, Smith played in 14 games and caught 46 passes for 554 yards and only two touchdowns. But you must keep in mind that Smith was playing with quarterbacks like Jimmy Clausen and Brian St. Pierre. 

Smith, no doubt, has talent and has a lot left in the thank. 

New England is a potential suitor for Smith, and I wouldn't be surprised if Bill Belichick pulled off a trade on draft day for Carolina's stud receiver.
