Urijah Faber and the Top 10 Coaching Candidates for TUF 14

Tim McTiernanJun 7, 2018

The beginning of the 13th season of "The Ultimate Fighter" is just around the corner. The show is filming now, and the first episode is set to air on March 30.

It took quite awhile for the coaches to be announced for this year, and in the end, it was announced that Junior dos Santos and Brock Lesnar would coach, and afterward, fight for No. 1 contender-ship to the heavyweight championship.

And of course, it is never too early to start speculating about who will coach next season, so here are 10(ish) candidates to coach Season 14 of "The Ultimate Fighter."

Urijah Faber and Dominick Cruz

Urijah Faber was the poster boy of the WEC. He will almost definitely not have the same hold on the UFC, but he can be the one to bring the new, lighter weights into the eyes of casual UFC fans.

His opposing coach couldn't be anyone but Dominick Cruz. Cruz is the current UFC Bantamweight Champion, and with a record of 17-1, his only loss is to Faber.

Faber wants Cruz and Cruz wants Faber. If they do TUF together, when the fight afterwards, it could be the first UFC card headlined by bantamweights.

Frankie Edgar/Gray Maynard and Anthony Pettis/Clay Guida

After UFC 125, and before the coaches for TUF 13 were announced, many people were saying that the coaches should be Edgar and Maynard. That did not come to fruition, but perhaps after their fight at UFC 130, the winner could coach TUF.

Opposing them would again be the No. 1 contender in the lightweight division, and barring some unexpected occurrences, that looks to be the winner of the Anthony Pettis versus Clay Guida fight at the finale of TUF 13.

Shogun Rua/Jon Jones and the No. 1 Contender

3 of 5

At UFC 126, Jon Jones submitted Ryan Bader. In the interview directly after the fight, Jones got the opportunity of a lifetime. He was offered the chance to fight for the UFC Light Heavyweight Title at UFC 128.

He will fight against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in a fight that is sure to tell us a lot.

After that, if Jones wins, maybe they want to let fans in on what he is really like. If Shogun wins, then people will want to see the man who stopped the hype train.

Opposing Shogun/Jones would be whoever the No. 1 contender happens to be at the time. Be it Machida, Hamill or someone else entirely, it would be a great season.

Perhaps it would be one of the next two on the list...

Another possible option that I'm going out on a limb for is Randy and Rampage.

Should Randy get past Lyoto and should Rampage get past Hamill, it would only make sense for these two to fight and decide the No. 1 contender. Especially if Couture really does want to make that one last title run.

Couture is a legend and has coached TUF in the past.

Rampage is not quite up to Couture's legendary status, but he is still great and has also been a TUF coach, most recently on the season of heavyweights.

This one would come down to who each team brought in to help them out.

Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre

Could you imagine?

UFC 129, Georges St-Pierre defeats Jake Shields in dominating fashion. At the post-fight press conference, Dana White announces that Silva and GSP have each accepted the super-fight.

Then he makes the announcement, that they will coach opposite each other on the 14th season of "The Ultimate Fighter."

As if the normal buildup to the fight wouldn't be enough, having them coach TUF, get even more casual fans interested, the buy rate for their fight would be through the roof.
