NHL's Best Players Still in the League Without a Cup

Eddie TheisenFeb 14, 2011

There is so much diversity in the NHL today, almost any team has a chance to make a run at it.

Then there are the players that have been close, but have not captured hockey's holy grail.

Let's look at some of the best players in the league that haven't gotten that ring or their names engraved on Lord Stanley's Cup.

Daniel Alfredsson

With a 107 playoff games under his belt and 88 points with it, he still doesn't have a Cup.

The 15-year veteran reached close one year with the Senators in 2007, but lost in five games to the Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks.

Time is running out for this great pro and it doesn't look like the Senators will be contenders anytime soon.

Jarome Iginla

Jarome Iginla is arguably the best player in the league without his name on the Cup.

He has played in 54 playoff games and has 49 points. That is a pretty solid playoff performer without a ring.

He reached the finals in 2004 with the Flames and despite having a 3-2 series lead, the Lightning would come back to win the series in seven.

Todd Bertuzzi

Hate him or like him, he is and has been a very talented player since his career began in 1995 with the Islanders.

He has 64 playoff games and 39 points.

He has never even been to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Shawn Horcoff has spent his whole career with the Oilers since 2000. He has played 35 playoff games and has 23 points to his name.

Horcoff and the Oilers made it to the Finals in 2006, but came up one win short as they lost to the Hurricanes in seven games.

Ryan Smyth

Not the most skilled of players he does rack up the points by earning his goals in the crease and always has since Smyth's career began in 1994 with the Oilers; he has 87 playoff games and 54 points to go with it.

He made the Finals in 2006 with Shawn Horcoff.

Jason Spezza

Spezza began his career in 2002 with the Senators and has been there ever since.

In 46 games, he has 46 points and reached the Finals with Alfredsson in 2007, but were defeated by the Ducks.

Shane Doan

Doan's first year was 1995 with the Winnipeg Jets, the Phoenix Coyotes' old home.

Doan has been there ever since and has only 35 playoff games in 15 years at Phoenix with 14 points.

He, nor the Coyotes, has never reached the Finals.

Joe Thornton

Thornton has always been a playmaker and racked up the points, but unfortunately for him, he has not been as good at it in the playoffs.

He started his career with the Boston Bruins in 1997 and is now on the San Jose Sharks. He has played 91 postseason games and has 65 points.

He has never reached a Final in his career.

Tomas Kaberle

Kaberle has been on the Leafs his whole career since 1998 and has 77 playoff games with 28 points.

He and the Leafs haven't reached the playoffs since 2004, or made or won a Cup Final since 1967.

Alex Ovechkin

I do realize Ovechkin is younger than everyone on the list and has a long career ahead of him, but everyone is waiting on when he will win his first cup or, for that matter, if he ever does.

In 28 playoff games, Ovechkin has 40 playoff points. He has won one playoff series and has never got passed the second round.
