NHL Power Rankings: The 10 Most Overrated Players Today

Eddie TheisenJun 7, 2018

There are just some players in every sport that get the money and praise they don't deserve. There are some that do not get the money and praise they deserve. Then there are the some we are never really sure about. The NHL has their fair share of all of them as we break down some of the most overrated NHL players in the league.

10. Brooks Orpik

This "stay at home defenseman" has a rating of -4 in his 501 game career which would not look good on any resume for a defenseman. Also the cause of many late game penalties (more penalty minutes than games) and defensive zone turnovers, this is one D-man I would not want in front of my goalie.

9.Carey Price

This young "talent" drafted by Montreal has done nothing but disappoint the Canadiens fans and put up mediocre numbers. Pulled in last years playoffs after Halak was sure to have stolen the starting job from Price in Montreal but was traded away to St. Louis in the off season which means they were left to fend with Price. Off to a good start this do not expect it to last down the stretch of his career.

8.Chris Drury

Once a very strong, young player in Colorado it seems as of late his career is slowing down in a big way. Now it seems he is always tending to a knew long term injury that the Rangers are just paying him to heal. His last good year was in 2007 with Buffalo as this season in 23 games he has only tallied 4 points... All of them assists!

I know what you're thinking. I am crazy. But the fact of the matter is he is a man that isn't long term for your team or franchise. He is a man that will just want to go to new grounds every 4 or 5 years and just be a temp. He also is very inconsistent as we saw with the Panthers and did not want to be part of the solution there.

6. Dustin Penner

Dustin Penner had a stellar year for the Anaheim Ducks in their run to the 2007 Stanley Cup championship while being one of the unsung hero's of the team. However following their victory the Oilers saw something in him that they liked and offered him $21.25 million over 5 years. He had a good first year in "Oil Country" but he has been shaky and inconsistent the last few years and is now in talks of trades with many teams for the deadline.

5.R.J Umberger

Not a very good player if you are looking for a Selke Trophy winner. Other than that he is always getting caught with his head down and is injury prone. Known as a "point getter" he usually can only score on the Power Play and is not an all around complete player. Expect the Blue Jackets to try and make a move with him in the next year or two.

4.Olli Jokinen

Another person known for not being long term for your team is Olli Jokinen. He has been on 6 teams in his 12th year in the NHL. In 12 years in the league he has a playoff experience of 6 games in 2008-2009. And you can't say he is an all around hustler often being noted as lazy and with a -95 who could blame the reports. I know some scorers are paid just to score but that is what separates players like Marian Hossa and Pavel Datsyuk from the"just scorers" category.

3.Marc-Andre Fleury

Just being known as an inconsistent goalie in the league is never a good thing in the NHL. He has been praised and hated in the city of Pittsburgh but mostly hated. When the Steelers lose and they have no one to blame the Pittsburgh natives even say "Damnit Fleury" and that is not a joke. Also his game 7 debacle last year during the playoffs against the Canadiens was a huge reason for their early exit last year. With numbers like this do you really think he is worth $5.5 million a year?

2. Roberto Luongo

GP:654, Record:297-262-33, SV%:9.19, GAA:2.55

With a barely above .500 record for his career I do not see why he is given so much praise in the city of Vancouver and other NHL fans around the league. Also why do the Canuck fans chant "Louuuuuuu" every time he makes a routine save even if it's a dump in from the other teams blue line. He and the rest of the Canuck's have shown that they can not really compete in the playoffs with 2nd round exits. He has made the playoffs 3 years in a row now and has yet to get past the 2nd round or play well enough to show he is a all around goalie. Just like Fleury does he sound $5.33 million a year worthy?

1.Patrick Marleau

Don't get me wrong Marleau is a great player... in the regular season. The reason he gets number one is because he just like the rest of the Sharks can not perform in the playoffs. We know if you put up numbers like this you are considered great but when you consistently do not show up for playoffs I do not consider them great. I mean there is a reason we call it the "second season" right? Once he can step up and lead his team like he can he will get over the hump of being considered a "no show" come playoff time.
