Strikeforce Fedor vs. Silva: Fedor Emelianenko Mystique Gone, Retirement?
Just like that, Fedor has gone from the best to just another good fighter.
His loss tonight to Antonio Silva in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix has killed whatever mystique the great Fedor had.
He entered the night the favorite and left leaving a lot of unanswered questions.
Silva dominated the fight from the beginning, and in the second round, made it known that Fedor might just be past his prime.
For the first time in his MMA career, Fedor is on a two-fight losing streak.
Fedor was outsized and outmatched by Silva. Silva used his size and power to pound out Fedor on the ground and had him in a submission twice, before Fedor finally broke out.
Whatever hype there was surrounding Fedor left the building in East Rutherford.
The doctor stoppage has single handily put Fedor's career on the ropes.
By the end of the fight, Fedor couldn't even see out of his right eye.
Now, for the rest of the tournament.
It seems it comes down to two fighters—Alistair Overeem and Fabricio Werdum. Both of whom will fight each other on April 9th.
Fedor was on top of the MMA world for nearly a decade, and now, he has fallen off. No longer shall Fedor have the hype he had coming into his Strikeforce debut. No longer will there be talks of him being able to dominate the UFC heavyweight division.
The first round was scored to Fedor by two judges, and in the second round, all three judges declared it a win for Silva.
After tonight's victory, Silva is on the fast track to the finals. His domination of Fedor tonight should be enough momentum to see him beat either Werdum or Overeem.
But what happens to the MMA legend, Fedor Emelianenko?
Fedor made it unclear of his future. When asked whether or not he would retire and it be the last time fans would see him in the ring, Fedor replied with a "Yes, maybe."
He may have announced his retirement from MMA. He didn't go out on top like he wanted to, but he's had a great career. Like all great movies, maybe it's time for the hero to ride off into the sunset after his performance.
