Red Wings: Are They Finally Getting Healthy and Back On Track?

David GarrettFeb 11, 2011

What is something every sports fan says about their team? We can could do it if we stay healthy. This is something Detroit Red Wings fans know all too well. Last year it looked bleak for the Red Wings to keep their 100-point season streak alive before getting healthy and capturing it in the last two weeks of the season. I mean there was even a time when they were the 10th seed looking in from the outside at the playoffs.

But that was last year...

Starting us off this year, the Wings were on a tear and looked like the team most of us grew up watching. Until the injury bug struck them again. Leading up to the All-Star break, there was a point in time when almost their whole starting two lines were on IR or listed as day-to-day and that break couldn't come fast enough for them.

Coming into the break, though, the Wings ended 6-3-1, not bad for a team with the injuries they have, but it is a little bit misleading as four of those wins came in OT and two of them coming in shootouts. The team just looked flat in many of them, showing little emotion.

Since the break, the Wings were 2-3, but have gotten back Pavel Datsyuk and Tomas Holmstrom. The team struggled in both games they returned in, and losing Valtteri Filppula for a least a week is another blow to the team. Some good news: Brad Stuart looks like he will be able to return as soon as next week as well.

That was until tonight...

The Red Wings traveled up to the third best team in the east, at the moment, in Boston. We didn't look like the road team out there tonight though. The team finally showed the passion they've been missing as of late and do they look good when they do.

The Wings dominated in shots (34-26), stayed out of the penalty box (6 min-14 min) and the final score (6-1). I leave hits out because this isn't built like the teams of old that would physically beat teams up as they've shifted to a finesse team.

What I would like to see Detroit work on is winning more faceoffs (Boston won 36-28). That was something that hurt us in the playoffs last year and led to our exit.

Hopefully Detroit can build off this momentum and lead it into the next game, when Boston will come to the Joe on Sunday.
