Kim Clijsters Returns To The World Number One Spot

Gregory LanzenbergFeb 11, 2011

Five years ago, Kim Clijsters was the No. 1 player in the World.

Not many would have believed she would be at this position once she decided to retire.

In 2009, Kim decided to return to competitive tennis after an exhibition she played with Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi, to honour the roof on the Centre Court of Wimbledon.

She then won the U.S. Open, surprising everyone.
" The training sessions were very difficult for me at the start of my second career" said Clijsters.
" But it's worth it!".
"The great things about my career now is I get to share my victories with the whole team, and the ones you love". Added the World number one.
"It's thanks to them I'm able to be at this stage." concluded Kim.

The Bree native needed to wait a year and a half before returning at the top of the World.

It is also official that Kim Clijsters is the first player ever to have become World No. 1 as a mother.

The Belgian, who only needed one more victory to reclaim to the top spot, defeated Jelena Dokic, 6-3, 6-0 to reach the semifinals of the Open GDF Suez.

Clijsters might not be the best player of all time, but the 27-year-old is the currently the best player by far.

Since Serena Williams and Venus Williams have been sidelined 80 percent of the time since last Wimbledon and since Caroline Wozniacki and Vera Zvonareva still struggle to beat the last major hurdle that will make them win their first major, the Australian Open champion deserve her ranking.

In 2010, the Bree native won five tournaments, including her third U.S. Open and the WTA championships in Doha, where she knocked out the current World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki. On that occasion, the Belgian became only the fifth player in WTA history to win the season-ending event three or more times.

On Friday, the three-time U.S. Open champion had to beat an old friend by the name of Jelena Dokic.
Both competitors played the French Open as a team in the junior doubles in 1998, and even won a WTA doubles title together, at Los Angeles, in 2002.

They have also clashed ten times, with Dokic winning three of those matches—including their last meeting before today—when Kim was ranked number one, at Zurich, in 2003.

Clijsters now leads the overall head-to-head series with Dokic, 7-3.

If you think about it, it's amazing that they had to wait eight years before playing each other again.

It's also stunning to think Clijsters is undefeated at the Paris Indoor.

Indeed, the 27-year-old played in 2004 for the last time and won the event.

I also want to point out that Clijsters beat both Venus and Serena at the 2009 US Open on her comeback.

Kim also beat Venus In Miami and the US Open last year.

Elsewhere, Kim enjoys spending some time with her fans, as well as giving a nice amount of her prize-money to charity.

Last but not least, all tennis addicts should keep in mind that if Serena is still not playing until Wimbledon, it would not be impossible for Kim to win all four majors this year!
