Getting to know...Broncos RB Selvin Young

Sayre BedingerSep 22, 2008

Hey Broncos fans!  This is to be the first of a weekly article in which I will bring you all information on a different Broncos player.

The Denver Broncos' offense has been virtually unstoppable this season, as they are tops in the NFL in points per game, second in total yards, second in passing yards, and last but certainly not least, tenth in rushing yards.

Let's face it; the Broncos could plug Burt Snurd into their backfield, and he could go for 700+.  With the 2008 offense bringing shades of '98, accompanied by the emergence of Denver's offensive line and young skill players, the running game is being vastly overlooked.

The Broncos went without a 1,000 yard back in 2007 for the first time since any Broncos fan can remember.  Enter Selvin Young, an undrafted college free agent out of Texas.  Young burst on to the scene last year to rush for over 700 yards in limited action, and was one of the most underrated players in the NFL, finishing third in yards per carry.

In 2008, Young has shown his playmaking ability, rushing for 179 yards on 26 attempts.  He is averaging 6.9 yards per carry, and scored a touchdown opening day against the Raiders.

Not only is young a great ball-carrier, he is also a receiving threat.  He has 37 career receptions and with the emergence of Jay Cutler that number only figures to increase.

Selvin Young was a great high school prospect, ranked by most as the fifth best running back coming out of his class.  Young committed to Texas where he served as a backup to Cedric Benson for most of his collegiate career.  He was very injury prone, and never found a niche at college, which hurt his draft stock tremendously.

After being invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, Young went undrafted and was immediately signed by the Denver Broncos, where he took full advantage of his playmaking abilities.  He impressed coach Shanahan enough to emerge as the backup RB to then starter Travis Henry.

After a strong 2007 campaign, he has become the new starting running back of the Denver Broncos, and has had a great impact on this stellar offense.
