Erik Morales vs. Marcos Maidana Nearly a Done Deal
Fresh information has just arrived from Golden Boy Promotions, suggesting that a fight between Erik "El Terrible" Morales (51-6-0) and Marcos "El Chino" Maidana (29-2-0) is essentially a done deal for April 9th in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The WBA interim super lightweight title will be on the line.
What can I say is Golden Boy Promotions is playing with fire. While I have an immense amount of respect for Morales, putting him in front of a knockout artist nowadays will probably not end better than against Pacquiao.
Morales is a fighter of fighters. While he is a tremendous technical fighter, it doesn’t require much effort to invite him into a brawl. Maidana is seven years younger, likely much hungrier and most definitely stronger.
Almost 90 percent of Maidana’s fights ended in a knockout and this fight will be no different.
Only the fighters that are able to keep Maidana at bay have hopes of surviving this unrelenting granite-chinned powerhouse. Even Amir Khan, easily a pro at keeping fighters away from himself, was tagged by Maidana and felt the power as his legs became weak and knees buckled.
Morales will not be able to keep Maidana away and, most importantly, does not posses anything that can hurt Maidana at any point in the fight.
In my opinion, Morales is being sent to a slaughter.
Boxing has proven to be a sport where anything can happen to anyone, at any time. Hope is never absent, and confidence is always welcome. Nevertheless, some fights just don’t make sense.
It is very unfortunate that Erik Morales and Juan Manuel Marquez (52-5-1) could not come to a contractual agreement.
I believe that their fight would be a better matched battle with a bigger buzz and financial gain for everyone.
