Browns Offseason 2011: Shaun Rogers Release and What It Means For The Team

Jake DFeb 9, 2011

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported Wednesday, Feb. 9 that six players on the Browns roster would be cut, including defensive tackle Shaun Rogers

Rogers, Eric Barton, David Bowens, Kenyon Coleman, Robert Royal and John St. Clair will all not be returning to the Cleveland Browns next season.

The only shocker of this group is Rogers, as he will more than likely be rostered before the end of the offseason, and could've been used in a trade should a CBA be signed. This puts an emphasis on getting a defensive tackle in the upcoming draft or through free agency, however.

Bowens had a tremendous showing against the Saints, but hasn't really done anything spectacular in his time as a Brown. Coleman is old, and will be replaced with youth more than likely in the draft. Robert Royal couldn't catch a pass if he tried, and St. Clair should not be wearing an NFL jersey ever again.

These moves however, are reflective of the moves that are going to have to be made this offseason. With the cut of Eric Barton, certain roster spots have been opened. This may give one a look at what players the Browns will be looking to sign.

Rogers was going to be replaced whether they cut him or not, and Coleman hasn't made any eyes widen. He also is 31 and is in need of a younger, more dynamic replacement. Barton was a special-teamer and back-up linebacker.

The Browns also shouldn't completely forget the defensive backs in free agency and the draft. Finding a compliment for Joe Haden is important

St. Clair, as well, spelled his doom with his awful offensive line play throughout the season. Bowens is going to be the first of many linebackers cut from this team to add more defensive line depth, but this might also be a motivator to the existing linebackers to be expecting to either play hard or be left behind.

This could also be Heckert and Holmgren clearing house to make spots for other lesser players through free agency, nobody can be certain. Whatever ends up happening, the end of April isn't too far off. Keep your eyes on the Browns this draft.
