Super Bowl 2011: Which Companies Outdid Themselves with Their Commercials?

Sean MerrimanJun 7, 2018

This year's Super Bowl was the most-watched sporting event of all time, according to recent reports.

While the game itself should go down as one of the better Super Bowls of all time, many people were glued to their televisions in anticipation of seeing which commercials would create the biggest laughs of 2011.

There were a number of commercials this year that seemed to catch everyone's attention and have been the hottest conversation pieces on the radio airwaves outside of Kim Kardashian and Justin Bieber.

Let's take a look at this year's Super Bowl commercials and find out which companies outdid themselves in 2011.

10. Cars.com, 2010

1 of 20

In 2010's Super Bowl, Cars.com released this commercial. It went through the life of Timothy Richman and discussed how he had a great knowledge of a variety of topics throughout his life. This led to him being nervous about buying a car, so he went to Cars.com to get the perfect car at the perfect price.

Not much humor in this commercial.  In fact, it's actually kind of frightening when it shows a tornado coming at a group of people and swooping up their school bus.

We get the idea of what Cars.com is going with here, but let's now look at their 2011 Super Bowl ad.

10. Cars.com, 2011

2 of 20

Cars.com came out with this ad in 2011 with the point being that it is, "better to let others go first so we can learn from their experiences."

Again, a commercial with not too much humor. It's also another semi-frightening site when you see a man with his leg where his head should be, and then a man gets shot by three arrows in the chest.

The idea is that you learn from experience of others by reading what they say at Cars.com.

This ad was slightly better than the 2010 version, but let's just hope it doesn't get played as much as the 2010 one did.

9. Audi, 2010

3 of 20

This commercial had some appreciable humor to it, that is for sure.

The idea behind Audi's 2010 Super Bowl ad is that people are not going green and in turn, are being stopped by the police because of little ridiculous acts that aren't considered, "going green."

In the end, the new Audi car is free to go because the Audi owner has "gone green" with this car.

It is amusing, a little long, but funny nonetheless.

9. Audi, 2011

4 of 20

Despite being a little long, this commercial was very funny and had a lot of people laughing at the new advertisement for Audi cars.

The segment about playing Kenny G music in order to get the guy's attention from breaking out of jail was perfect, and then at the end when they show Kenny G playing music, it was a perfect closing to the commercial where he escapes from jail in his Audi A8.

Satisfaction Rating:  7/10

8. Coca-Cola, 2010

5 of 20

This 2010 Coca-Cola commercial portrays a man sleepwalking through some extremely dangerous obstacles to end up at the fridge where he gets his Coca-Cola.

It doesn't have too much humor to it. It's pretty simple and really just doesn't give much of a reaction after watching it.

Overall, it's pretty plain for a Coca-Cola ad.

Satisfaction Rating:  3/10

8. Coa-Cola, 2011

6 of 20

This was one of the better commercials this year, not because it had any type of humor, but because of the graphics and anticipation of what they are getting at.

Until we see the Coca-Cola bottle logged into the ice midway through the commercial, we have no idea what the ad is for. For some of the commercial, it almost looks like a movie preview.

Very cool graphics, very fitting music, very good commercial.

Satisfaction Rating:  7/10

7. Go Daddy, 2010

7 of 20

This 2010 Go Daddy ad started off with a lot of promise, but it slowly faded as the commercial went on.

Any commercial that lasts for two minutes is a little too long for one's liking. The girl is obviously more attractive then Joan Rivers, but the humour just isn't quite there, and it drags on for too long.

The whole falling into the pool move was a little obvious to say the least.

Satisfaction Rating:  5/10

7. Go Daddy, 2011

8 of 20

This 2011 Go Daddy ad was way more humorous for viewers.

After giving us this sneak peak of what appears to be another extremely attractive Go Daddy girl, it turned out to be Joan Rivers, and the crowd was just stunned at the end.

While some might have hoped for a hotter girl to appear on screen, this one had to have everyone laughing at its conclusion.

Satisfaction Rating: 7/10

6. Bud Light, 2010

9 of 20

Bud Light always has some of the best Super Bowl commercials, and this one was a prime example of another good one.

The guy here has a house built of Bud Lights that are all full of beer. The closing scene when he opens the Bud Light shower curtain with his wife in there, was a great closing that likely had everyone laughing.

Satisfaction Rating:  7/10

6. Bud Light, 2011

10 of 20

This was one of the funniest commercials of this year.

The idea of the dogs hosting this party and serving the Bud Light was great, and the scene with the dog walking around on his hind legs with the tray full of beers was priceless.

Bud Light always does a great job with their commercials, and this one takes a slight edge over the 2010 ad—very slight.

Satisfaction Rating: 8/10

5. Kia, 2010

11 of 20

This is a prime example of a commercial that carries some good appeal when it first airs, but then gets way overplayed and begins to lose interest quickly.

The scene of the crew going to Vegas and then dancing in the bar with a stunningly hot girl is great, but why did they have to wear this commercial down by playing it so much?

Satisfaction Rating:  6/10

5. Kia, 2011

12 of 20

The 2011 Super Bowl Kia ad might have had the coolest graphics of any commercial this year.

It starts off kind of slow, but when the giant Poseidon-like character rises from the ocean and grabs the car as the music builds, everyone is hooked.

"One Epic Ride" describes the Kia, and "One Epic Ad" describes this commercial.

Satisfaction Rating:  8/10

4. Budweiser, 2010

13 of 20

This was a good ad by Budweiser, but the comedy aspect just wasn't there like it was with their recent 2011 ad.

"Nothing comes between friends" was the promo headline Budweiser went with in this commercial; pretty lame to be honest.

I say, bring back the Bud-weis-er frogs. Anybody agree with me on this one?

Satisfaction Rating:  5/10

4. Budweiser, 2011

14 of 20

This was the commercial they showed an advertisement for throughout the week leading up to the Super Bowl, but then cut it out midway through to leave the viewer wanting more.

Well, it was well worth the wait.

The commercial starts off serious and slow, but when everyone breaks out singing Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" with a Budweiser in hand, smiles and laughter were cracked across the nation.

Satisfaction Rating:  8/10

3. Bridgestone, 2010

15 of 20

Bridgestone's 2010 Super Bowl ad was a pretty good one.

These guys are stuck with a giant whale in their car and are trying to save it, which they do when the car stops on the dot.  They then close with the epic line, "Now that was a bachelor party."

It was tough to top this, but just wait until you see their 2011 ad.

Satisfaction Rating:  7/10

3. Bridgestone, 2011

16 of 20

Not many commercials made you laugh as hard as this one did during this year's Super Bowl.

The image of this guy ripping out all the cords of the computers, dumping coffee on the guy's laptop and throwing everyone's cell phone was nothing short of hysterical.

This was the perfect length for a commercial because it didn't drag on and kept you laughing the whole time.

Satisfaction Rating:  8/10

2. Volkswagen, 2010

17 of 20

This 2010 Volkswagen commercial was pretty plain and repetitive until the final scene with Tracy Morgan and Stevie Wonder, which was definitely worth a laugh or two.

Overall, it would be fair to say this was a pretty average commercial to be aired during the Super Bowl. With that said, just wait until you see the ad they came up with for the 2011 Super Bowl—if you haven't already.

Satisfaction Rating:  5/10

2. Volkswagen, 2011

18 of 20

This commercial has been receiving so much hype, that many have said that it is the best of all in 2011.

Bottom line, when you mix "Star Wars" and cars, you are going to get a big fan following. The move at the end when the kid tries to use "the force" to start the car and it turns on is great.

Props to Volkswagen for improving their product in a big way in 2011. I wonder if the sales of the cars will go up as well.

Satisfaction Rating:  9/10

1. Doritos, 2010

19 of 20

The reason why this Doritos commercial comes in at No. 1 is because both the 2010 and 2011 ads were some of the funniest commercials to ever hit the TV.

When the kid slaps the guy in the face and sets him straight, I can remember breaking into laughter, as I'm sure many did.

When you can still remember a commercial from the year before that hasn't been overplayed, that's how you know it's a good one.

Satisfaction Rating:  9/10

1. Doritos, 2011

20 of 20

This was the most awkwardly hilarious commercial of all this year.

The phrase, "mmm cheese," has caught on like wildfire across the nation after Doritos launched this memorable ad.

The thing here is that the second part of the commercial wasn't even needed, simply because the first half was so good.

If Doritos keeps these types of advertisements going, they will be on top of lists for years to come, and that's a fact.
