NFL Rumors: 10 Landing Spots for Former Tennessee Titans' OC Mike Heimerdinger

Sal DeRoseFeb 9, 2011

When a franchise hires a head coach, the rest of his staff is is often replaced. A victim of this process is former Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger.

However Heimerdinger will get another shot to coach somewhere, whether as an offensive coordinator or in a diminished role.

Here are some spots where Heimerdinger could land.

Washington Redskins

A long time ago, Mike Shanahan was coach of the Denver Broncos.

OK, not that long ago, but when he was, Mike Heimerdinger was his assistant head coach.

He won't get the ability to be an offensive coordinator (a spot occupied by Shanahan's son, Kyle) but he could reach out to his old friend to help coach a position.

Heimerdinger helped old, journeyman quarterback Kerry Collins break out of his shell. Maybe he could do the same with Donovan McNabb.

Plus, Chris Johnson flourished in Tennessee. The Redskins have the 30th-ranked rush offense.

Maybe Shanahan would be willing to lend a hand to his former assistant coach and bring him on board in washington.

Dallas Cowboys

They have an opening at the wide receiver coach position. Jason Garrett is also technically both their offensive coordinator and their head coach.

What better way to relieve him then to hire Heimerdinger?

He has prior experience as a wide receiver coach, not to mention that he also played wide receiver at Eastern Illinois from 1970-1974.

He coached Florida's receivers when they won two consecutive SEC titles in 1984 and 1985.

He also was Denver's wide receiver coach from 1995-1999, winning two Super Bowls.

If hired, he could really help the development of Dez Bryant and help Miles Austin find even more success.

Cleveland Browns

Pat Shurmur has already said he would handle the play-calling in 2011.

The Browns will almost assuredly go into the 2011 season without an offensive coordinator.

But, the addition of Heimerdinger could greatly help improve a team that's, well, pretty bad.

Heimerdinger would be able to work with the Browns receivers and could help out in the development of Colt McCoy. A move in this direction could be positive from Cleveland's standpoint.

A dynamic duo of Josh McDaniels and Mike Heimerdinger?

That doesn't sound like a bad idea.

Heimerdinger has minimal experience as a quarterback coach, but the Rams have an opening at the position.

Heimerdinger has coached the likes of Steve McNair and Jay Cutler, with good results. Sam Bradford could only benefit from Heimerdinger's presence.

Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins could certainly use the help on the offensive side of the ball.

Their pass offense was ranked 16th in the NFL last season, and their rush offense was ranked 21st.

Sparano could use Heimerdinger's experience to help push his team a little further this season. Heimerdinger has done great things with some players and could help get Chad Henne to become a potentially decent quarterback for the Dolphins.

Baltimore Ravens

John Harbaugh would benefit from the addition of Heimerdinger to his staff.

They have an opening at quarterback coach, and he could definitely help the likes of Joe Flacco.

Flacco is already looking pretty good for the future. Mike's touch could be what he needs to have a breakout season.

The Ravens would only benefit from adding him to the staff. The pass offense was ranked 20th in the NFL last season.

It would be a pretty good benefit.

Detroit Lions

Scott Linehan is both offensive coordinator and quarterback coach.

The relief of having Mike on the coaching staff could seriously benefit he and the rest of the staff, especially with young quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Heimerdinger would add just a little touch to a Lions pass offense that was ranked 12th last season. The rush offense was 23rd in the NFL.

It wouldn't be a bad move to make him an assistant or even make him quarterback coach.

Kansas City Chiefs

Last year, Kansas City had no quarterback coach and the 30th-ranked pass offense in the league. Not to take away from their rush offense, which was first in the NFL last season, but the touch of Heimerdinger could help out that 30th-ranked pass offense.

It would be a great move for the Chiefs. Heimerdinger could help out significantly with both the quarterback and wide receivers for the Chiefs.

The 30th-ranked pass offense would be a thing of the past for the Chiefs.

Cassel didn't have a bad season, but completing passes could be something of a benefit for a guy who only threw for 3,116 yards last year, most of which was to Dwayne Bowe, who had 1,162 yards. He also caught 15 of Cassel's 27 touchdown passes.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Jacksonville's 27th-ranked pass offense could use some help.

They have an opening at the quarterback coach position. While it's not really the fault of the coach—David Garrard isn't exactly the best of quarterbacks—they need someone to help build up Garrard. With Heimerdinger, the offense could be much better than the struggling unit it was in 2010.

This is another team that would only benefit from having him.

Mike Heimerdinger is closing in on 60. He has already battled cancer.

I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't go out and get another job.

Cancer is an ugly thing to battle and he may take time off to heal and maybe, come the 2012 season, he could get a job.

This is the best option for him.

Take some time off and relax. You'll get another job soon.

Heimerdinger isn't a bad offensive coordinator. He could have a job sometime soon. He can wait this out at home if need be.
